meet "geisha girl" | the golo profile

Published Feb. 19, 2008

The subject of our third profile is the well-known, highly popular Geisha Girl. She had the most votes in our recent poll and was nominated many times over in a recent blog. Geisha was kind enough to give up a portion of her lunch hour for a quick chat. Here’s what she had to say:

Angela: I notice you recently changed your profile name from Geisha Girl to Mocha Choca Geisha Queen. What prompted the change?

Geisha Girl: Too much confusion. People kept asking me if I was Chinese or Japanese. I think the “Mocha Choco” kind of answered that question. It keeps the confusion down.

Angela: So what do you think people think you are now?

Geisha Girl: Crazy.

(We both Laugh)

Angela: You are somewhat of a GOLO legend. You have 9,217 comments on your profile page. How did you become so popular?

Geisha Girl: I talk to everybody. I bother everybody until they tell me not to bother them anymore. I keep conversation going. That’s just what I do.

Angela: What kind of conversations do you enjoy?

Geisha Girl: Real talk. I like to get to know people online. What’s going on at work? How’s your day? What are you thinking about?  .

Angela: What makes people want to talk to you?

Geisha Girl: I think they know they can confide in me and a lot of my comments are paragraphs, not just one line answers.  Sometimes my workday sucks and I can vent and I can give people the whole rundown. It makes for interesting conversation.

Angela: Do you ever talk to other GOLO members offline?

Geisha Girl: Yes. If someone wants to talk to me or share something in private, we e-mail.

There are people who genuinely care and some things are real personal, real deep.

Angela: So, are you the Dr. Phil of GOLO?

Geisha Girl: (Laughs) I’m not smart enough to be Dr. Phil but I use common sense.

So those who come to me on my page and ask for my email address. I give it to them. I’m open.

Angela: You wrote a blog about your mom’s condition and received an outpouring of support. Did you expect that from people you know only in cyberspace?

Geisha Girl: I really didn’t, and the fact that people still come on my page and ask: “How’s mom?” makes me feel good because a lot of things I can’t talk to my family about because we’re not that close. It’s easier to tell people you don’t know. It was good to blog about it on GOLO.

Angela: Do you find it amazing that you can open up to people in that way?

Geisha Girl: It is amazing. People enjoy taking a break from the workday, exchanging thoughts and ideas.

Angela: How is your mom?

Geisha Girl: (Pauses) She’s okay. I took her to the doctor Monday and they found something else. Everything’s a process. We’re just praying everyday.

Angela: You’re somewhat of a peacemaker on GOLO. Would you happen to be the eldest sibling?

Geisha Girl: I’m the middle child. My sister always got me into trouble, and my brother could do no wrong. I used to argue with people in the beginning. Now I just try to be peaceful. I’ve  learned to respect people’s opinions. I think for the most part the arguing has gone down. It makes the day more peaceful. When it’s a good GOLO day, it’s a good day.

Angela: You mention “writing poetry” as one of your hobbies on your profile. Written anything lately?

Geisha Girl: I don’t know where my muse is. I went to my yahoo account recently and had an e-mail from a woman who saw something I wrote on another website and she wanted permission to recite it and more feedback from me.

Angela: That’s a big deal!

Geisha Girl: I was shocked.

Angela: Where can we find that poem?

Geisha Girl: http://black-poetry.com/blog/category/revolutionary/

Angela: Who or what inspires you to write poetry?

Geisha Girl: Life inspires me. It depends on what I’m feeling. I used to write about love and love loss…back when I was younger and feeling like my heart was always broken. Now I focus on more real issues.

Angela: Is it your dream to write poetry full-time?

Geisha Girl: I would love to write for a living. I’ve been published and received certificates and awards. I’m tired of working two jobs. Being single is expensive.

Angela: So is being married.

(GG laughs)

Angela: Tell me something shocking about you.

Geisha Girl: Uhmmmmmm I struggle with an eating disorder.

Angela: Wow, is it a constant struggle?

Geisha Girl: Yes, it’s a daily struggle. I’m real self-conscious about my weight. It gets hard and it comes with a lot of guilt. I’m not as bad as I was, it’s getting better. I eat much healthier now.

Angela: What are you doing right now, other than talking to me?

Geisha Girl: I just dropped off my taxes at the post office. I sent them in already, but forgot to send my W-2’s and they sent it back to me. I am clueless at times, but I’m growing.

Angela: If you won 1.5 million dollars tonight, what would you do tomorrow?

Geisha Girl: I would still be working, trying to make more money. I’d pay off my mom’s medical bills, send my brother to college and I’d just float around the world

Angela: In a plane, or by car?

Geisha Girl: Neither. I’d literally float, in a real boat, like Columbus.

Angela: Would you log on to GOLO?

Geisha Girl: I’m pretty sure I would have to have some type of wireless web and get my signal straight. I need to get to 10 thousand posts on my profile page.

Angela: Who are your GOLO favorites?

Geisha Girl: Everyone who talks to me is considered my favorite. I try to speak to everyone on my friends list every day.

Angela: Wow, I’m impressed.

Geisha Girl: We have our spa day on GOLO on Tuesdays and Thursdays when we act as though we’re in a spa all day.

Angela: That’s classic. Who is in on this spa day?

Geisha Girl: Sue Donym, Brooklynmom and Ms ohbaby.

Angela: Not to be morbid here, but what do you want on your tombstone?

Geisha Girl: Lived here, died there!

(We both laugh)

Angela: Well, that about sums it up, Mocha Choco…but is there anything you want people to know about you?

Geisha Girl: I like everybody. Even those who don’t respect me. I’m here to have a good time. GOLO is about an exchange of ideas and thoughts and that’s how it should be. It can be peaceful…

I have peace on my page!

Angela: Good luck with the IRS.

Geisha Girl: Thank you. God knows I hope I get it right
