villanova cannot complain about call
Published Feb. 12, 2008I'm so sick of hearing about the officials deciding the Georgetown-Villanova game last night. The officials were doing their jobs, the Villanova players should have been doing their jobs.
This game was not decided by a referee. This game was decided by Corey Stokes who pushed Jonathan Wallace 70-feet from the basket, and with just one-tenth of a second on the clock. That's not the official's fault.
If it was a foul with 14-minutes left, if it was a foul in the first 20-seconds, if it was a foul with 3-minutes left, it's a foul with one-tenth of a second left. Period.
Sure, you can stoop to the level of blaming the official for calling the foul, but doesn't Stokes need to take some responsibility for committing the foul? It was clear that he pushed him.
Some have said the official should not have called the foul because neither Stokes nor Villanova gained an advantage by pushing Wallace out of bounds. Sorry, but that doesn't matter. A foul, is a foul. If it's a foul, the official blows his whistle. Villanova shouldn't have been playing that tight of defense with such little time remaining. One-tenth of a second isn't even enough time to take a shot.
Villanova has no one but itself to blame in this one, but instead of criticizing this official, we should be pinning him with a ribbon for doing the right thing. I wish more officials would call it like it really is.

You haven't been reading the threads then. Just b/c there is a foul discrepancy doesn't mean anything. It depends on style of play, shots taken, etc. When UNC doesn't play defense there aren't going to be a lot of fouls.
Clemson's big guys, Mays and Booker, took 16 shots, UNC's big guys, Hansbrough and Thompson, took 26 shots, not including all the times Hansbrough was fouled on shot attempts. On the other hand, Clemson's guards took 69 shots. UNC's guards took 29 shots. Clemson took 28 3's compared to UNC's 18. There's your discrepancy. When you pound the ball inside you're going to have more fouls called.
