some question raleigh's delay on tougher water rules

Published Feb. 12, 2008

Raleigh moves to the toughest water restrictions to date this Friday. But some people say tighter restrictions should have happened months ago.

I am amazed at the lack of concern from city officials.  They obviously have not traveled to the northern end of the lake and REALLY looked at it.  it is no longer Falls Lake...it is Falls creek!!!!..  My kids have commented for months about needing to preserve what we have..and now 10 months in they are calling for 'stage 2'??... This is un-freaking real... The Mayor and the manager should be seriously ashamed of themselves.  When we are out of H2O, they can shoulder the blame!!

Trying to suck enough water out of Fall Lake for all of Raleigh and the surrounding towns is like a local farmer trying to suck enough water out of a puddle in the road to take care of his home and farm. I agree with Steve and the rest that there should have been plans and work in progress years ago. Greed from politicians, land owners and builders is one of the biggest culprits.

Yet I have been saying this for over ten years. And we have several other crises coming up that are now only on the periphery. If construction continues, we will eventually strain the capabilities of Progress Energy. And though they are about to put in application for two more units at Shearon Harris, do you realize how long it will be prior to even the grant of approval let alone construction?

We also have a huge issue with roads that goes well beyond rush hour jams on I-40. It has been clear for two decades now where the expansion of residential development is taking place. Yet no one has deemed it appropriate to plan for infrastructure -- the procurement of land and right of ways for roads and bridges.

For decades, our leaders have been in reactive mode. That is more expensive, and far more interruptive on the lives of us voters. Yet the slim majority appears to be idiots and we keep electing brain dead morons who are more concerned about legacy than action.

It's a gamble for the city's and state's elected officials. Since the dye was cast by not doing anything proactive, low these many years, the current crop of growth first decision makers, are hesitant to make unpopular changes that might cost them votes. Headlines about strict measures would hurt growth, especially with that city by city ranking that comes out annually. So their hopes for election possibilities now lie with Mother Nature, if she doesn't come through and residents have to start buying expensive water from elsewhere, there will be some serious turnover in political offices. Their development money train will leave the station.

It's easy to see now what they should have done ten years ago.

The problem about planning ahead for this kind of exceptional weather event is convincing the average taxpayer that doing something that isn't needed right that second isn't a waste of money. Darned if you do, darned if you don't?

I agree with Steve. Further, previous administrations have squandered our tax dollars on "feel good" and PC projects. Something that supplied immediate gratification, instead of making tuffer, but less popular, long term plans to meet the growing needs of the area. I dont let the current group off the hook either...they did nothing until the problem was in a crisis mode. That's reacting, not proacting. Easley is no better. He's has been more worried about his legacy with his program for four year old children, and perhaps furthering his political future.

I wonder if anyone, anyone at all, in a position to turn good ideas into action (and even take credit for the brilliance)ever reads what goes into these GOLO blogs? I hate wasted intelligence. Any Public Utilities guys out there? City planners? Mayor? Is there no one else who can act? Mac

We take everything for granted, until we don't have it, or we need it. This is just one example, and like Steve said, it's not the current administrations fault. It's been happening for years.

Steve, I agree with you. My husband and I have said since last summer measures should have been taken long before...esp long before now. The people of Wake county and surrounding areas that have used Falls are seriously going to be in a 'bind' for lack of a better word when summer rolls around. We do have our own well and I am always on my three boys to seriously conserve the water we have. I have limited them to short showers and we have moved to paper plates and utensils. It costs a bit extra but nothing compared to having to dig my well deeper.. I only use the dishwasher when I have a full load which is rare since I wash mostly by hand. and limit the washer use if they dont have a full load to put in to be washed..the toilet may be my only downfall...I cant stand anything in it..it has to be clean at all times or I get AR over it... I certainly hope there are others that are just as concerned...and I'm not even a Raleigh water consumer...

Our problem is not the current response by our elected idiots; that is but a symptom. The problem is that they did not act ten years ago in dredging Falls Lake, constructing a new lake on the south side of the county to capture an additional 800 square miles of runoff, building a treatment plant for our waste water that would allow it to be placed into the new lake, and start seriously condidering desalination and transport from the coast using the I-40 corridor for the pipeline. And as we constructed all those projects, we should have made arrangements to tap into Kerr, er Buggs Island, Lake and taken advantage of that 60 foot differential between Kerr, er Buggs Island, and Falls.

But no...they are morons. So their only solution now is radical conservation resulting in the loss of jobs and businesses. Of course, that still won't solve the problem.
