mayor kicks marines out of toledo

Just another example of actions that I see as HOSTILE toward our troops - even though many say that everyone supports the troops - just not the war...

TOLEDO, OH -- Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on Friday ordered some 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines from Grand Rapids, Michigan, out of Toledo just before the unit was suppose to start a weekend of urban warfare training downtown.

The mayor’s spokesperson Brian Schwartz said, “the mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people. He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area."

Toledo police said they knew about the training and had approved the unit’s use of the Madison Building and the Promenade Park area.   The training was scheduled to start Friday afternoon and last until Sunday.   Police said the unit’s presence would have a minimal impact on the city.   Police issued a press release earlier in the week saying the marines would be wearing green camouflage uniforms, operate military vehicles, carry rifles, perform foot patrols, and fire blank ammunitiion during the exercise.

Schwartz said there was a breakdown in communication between police and the Finkbeiner administration that led to the mayor’s action.

“The marines drilled here three times during the Ford administration and once under the Finkbeiner administration.  After the last visit, the mayor told then police chief Jack Smith, that he did not want the marines back.   Smith failed to inform the current police administration of the mayor’s feelings,” Schwartz said.

NBC24 spoke to Jack Smith  who recalled that after the marines last visit, he and the mayor had a heated exchange about  the training.

“He told me he did not want them, as he put it, “playing war in Toledo’”, Smith recalled.  I told him, as a former marine, “that  if one young marine’s life is saved because of training he or she received in Toledo, Ohio, then it was worth the inconvenience.”

Smith said if the mayor objected, then he should have been the one to convey those feelings to police.  Smith took his run-in with the mayor as an objection to that last visit, and not future training in Toledo.

As a result, the Toledo police went ahead, granting approval to the 1-24th Marines to conduct the routine exercise.  The police notified members of the Finkbeiner administration, who were not aware that the mayor objected to unit’s training in Toledo.

When the mayor found out, he sent a member of his staff to tell marines they could not conduct urban operations in Toledo.

The unit was notified about 3:30 p.m. after an advance team arrived in Toledo.   Five buses carrying some 200 marines traveled four hours from Grand Rapids, only to find out the training had been shot down.

The unit briefly stopped at a another 1-24th marine base in Perryburg Township, then returned back to Grand Rapids where training was expected to be held this weekend.

A spokesperson for the marines said they were disappointed by the mayor’s decision especially after the city had been so helpful in the past.

I believe the Mayor will regret that decision. It will be interesting to see how he down plays this in the future. The people of Toledo may not be too forgiven come next election.

"bones, somehow I figure you don't get it. The right you have to spout your BS today is because of these HEROES! What part of that don't you get?"

That's just typical rhetoric. Sure people in the military may put themselves on the line to defend our rights, but they're not solely responsible for it. Civilians throughout history have put their lives on the line to defend their and others' personal rights at the time when they didn't have many, and the military were not fighting for them to do so.

Maybe some people just don't view this the way I do. If someone is gaurding my house & protecting my freedom, then that person could train where ever & when ever they saw fit to. That is the way I view our military, they are gaurding my house & they need training to keep their skills sharp & alert, & would not be an inconvenience what so ever.

They had already set up the day before, in the same abandoned building they had used previously. This story had one ot two sources 3 hours ago - if you google it, it has spread all over the web. i suspect we'll hear eithr an apology (of sorts) or it will snowball like the Berkeley incident and there will be hello pete to pay! Do you want to guess which party Finkbeiner belongs to?

tmedlin, I got my information by doing a google search the 1st time I read your post and reading the first few local news websites for that area just said he "pulled the plug" on the training and they returned home. After reading your response to my post I looked again. You are correct, most are stating that he told them to leave.

After reading more into this, it sounds like a problem with communication between the police and the mayor's office.

The mayor's office had been notified, the police issued the permits - the problem was that the staff in the mayor's office didn't KNOW he had an objection. After further investigation, his positions are pretty clear, as well as his record of being "on the fringe". I hate it for Toledo, because they elected him (there is a re-call effort underway, and this will just fuel that effort) and I hate it for the ALL the Marines who spent time planning and preparing for the excercises, NOT just the travel time involved. Based on his experiences with his last Police Chief, he obviously has an issue with the Marines - period-as most liberals do, until they need their help.

Disbursing of federal funds to cities should be tied to their cooperation in training such as this.

denverbob, please see my previous post. Duh!

Enolive - I agree 100% and Senator DeMint has already been notified and I expect to see Toledo mentioned in his next address - and will probably be included in his fight for the passage of his bill which was sparked by the Berkeley actions

Many liberals say they support the troops but as always actions speak louder than words.

In my humble opinion, anyone who signs up to serve this great country is a hero. Now is everyone of those signees a perfect person, well no. But is every lawyer, priest, professor, bricklayer, president, insert your own profession, perfect. Let's not let a few bad apples spoil the basket for the rest of the brave. If you say that I am on a high horse then "yee haww" because I respect and admire all of our military VOLUNTEERS and yes they are all HEROES to me.

Yes, and there are many people who do not believe that our military get disrespected - but I intend to post every disgusting example I find of it - there needs to be some light shed on this. They LOVED it when the Walter Reed problem came up, because they could blame the Bush administration - but don't want to hear about it when it involves the liberal elitists!

The mayor is a democrat, he is playing to his base. He is the mayor of Toledo - think about the demographics of that place, and you will understand that he will be reelected, should he chose to run again.

memonster, I only see the one post in which you drivel some bs about the heroes, we know they are not heroes, just unemployable in the private sector. Good for toleo, kick them out, no need to have that kind of people in your neighborhood.

Growing up in Moore County, we always had interaction with soldiers doing various scenarios for training. Maybe in Ohio, they have people in charge that would rather have an ill trained military to protecct us from the bad guys out there. The monologue that Colonel Jessup recites during the closing parts of "A few Good Men" should be required reading..."You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post."

denverbob - that must be you in the little pink dress on my next blog!
