gps units

Published Feb 1, 2008

I need some help here. I am directionally challenged.  I honestly can't go anywhere.  I have always been that way and do not expect to change at this late date.  I have been looking into a GPS unit for my car, doing some online research.  I just do not trust it.  You just don't know if those people posting their "reviews" problably work for that company.  I have been using the turn by turn on my onstar, but I don't really like it.  I have seen some of the units that actually show you the roads and everything.  I think that I would like that. If you have one and really like it please let me know.  I will need one that is fairly easy to operate, for I am also technologically challenged at times.

Garmins are awesome. I need one for work, I sell on the road. Can't say enough good things about it. One thing I will also say about it. It came loose once, it was mounted to the windshield but the mount thing that attaches to the windshield lost it's vacuum and came it loose. I made a right turn on Falls of the Neuse and the thing went flying out the driver's window and bounced through the intersection on the pavement! I had to stop traffic to get it. Incredibly, IT STILL WORKS GOOD AS NEW! I could not believe it. Needless to say, I re-engineered the mounting, it ain't going nowhere now. THANKS GARMIN!

Thanks ya'll for the answers. Been in Greensboro all day that's why I am responding so late. It looks like Garmin is the one to choose. I am going to look at one Monday night. Again I do appreciate the help.

My brother got a Garmin Nuvi 200w. It was incredible with country back roads. I was thoroughly impressed.

I would love one, but I cannot justify it to my wife. My travel consists of going to work, the store, etc. If I forget how to get to those places, my wife will take my keys.

We have a Garmin for the boat and one for the truck - LOVE them. They show roads and give verbal directions, etc. Garmin is coming out with a Nuviphone in 3rd quarter 2008...handheld cellphone plus full scale gps: http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/30/garmin-gets-official-with-its-nuvifone/

I have a portable Garmin for my boat, and it has never failed me after 7 years of service. Keep in mind that there has been a rash of car break-ins by thieves targeting GPS units, even built-in units. I suggest getting one you can easily remove and carry it in your pocket or lock it up in your truck or glove box. Also, the sweet thing about many GPS units is that say you go to a nice and outstanding restaurant or place you really like and want to return some day...even if it's across the country...if your unit allows you to enter a waypoint you will have that location recorded forever in your unit, enabling you to find it again very easily. So buying one that allows you to enter waypoints is critical for maximum usage. Some units are run off both batteries and cigarette plug-in jacks for power and are waterproof... great if you want to go walking around in an unfamilar location. You can even locate your car in a huge parking lot with them...if waypoints are enterable. Have fun!

Garmins are good, remember to get one that you can update the new streets too.

Thank you for asking the question and thanks to all the GOLOers for the answers. I've read enough posts by you folks to know that I trust your advice.

We both opted for the navigation system when we ordered our latest autos. I have to tell you that it's been a lifesaver on more than one occasion, and we've only had the cars for about a month now.

I'd highly recommend getting one of these.

I'm also researching them. I'm leaning towards the Magellen(sp). I used one when I went to Dega last year and it shows the roads, turns, points of interest, etc. It seemed to do a great job.

Garmin's are great...I have 2 handheld units, and one that I got for my car. Love Garmin!
