suspect in student's death, 2nd man charged in series of robberies
Published Jan 24, 2008WHAT???????????????????????????????????????????
I read this post attached to that story:
A state of emergency needs to be declared in Durham. Law enforcement's hands are tied by judges that value criminals' rights above victims' rights. With the state of emergency police could have more tools at their disposal to check suspicious people until the city regains some form of law and order.
The courts MUST stop letting criminals back out on the street!!! We need to RETHINK the idea of second chances! Thugs are going into the crime business knowing that they have much better odds of getting off several times before they have to find a smarter way to commit the crimes. Kids that don't have records yet are prime targets for recruiters!! They know they won't do time.
We need to crack down hard the first time until they learn that there won't be benefits to committing crimes.
Court officials need to get off their thrones and take responsibility for what they, the judges, are doing to the public. Their commonsense needs to prevail over their "pure" sense of justice!

Now, considering the moderators would not let me use the word THUG in reference to these same armed robbers, I'm shocked! Here is the explanation I got from Angela dated 1/21/08:
Hi Nancy:
I’m writing to let you know that we are really cracking down on name-calling in the comments section. That is why the word “thug” is not being allowed. I understand having issue with guidelines that may not have been in effect just a week ago, but the moderators are doing their best to weed out name-calling, even when it refers to people accused of crimes.
We are reading all comments and I must say that subsequent posts with the sole purpose of “testing” the system aren’t going to be allowed either. Much of it is valuable feedback however, and we taken all feedback seriously. That does not mean it will show up in the comments section, however.
We did appreciate the definition you provided for the word “thug,” but again, it is a word that constitutes name-calling and will therefore not be allowed.
So, I'm really confused now, is it allowed by some moderators and not others or is it allowed now and the moderators won't block the post if that word is used?
Oh my, bias in moderation rears it's head again? I'm shocked {wink}.

I believe in calling it what it is. If that makes people angry or uncomfortable, oh well. These punks in the news ARE thugs and that's probably the nicest thing I can call them.

If you can't refer to armed robbers as thiefs/thugs then WRAL has crossed a major line in their attempt to neutralize free speech!

Makes using the news on WRAL for discussion pointless, at least for me.
How could something so good fall apart so fast?
And I don't care what excuse is used, I know of plenty message boards that block by IP addy because most people have a static IP, my website recognizes IP addy's per customer so to say it can't be done is nonsense. They could block troublemakers and if by the rare chance an innocent is blocked, they could contact WRAL and get it addressed.
But I don't think that's the problem for WRAL as much as it is to play word God. :)
