illegal immigration explained

Published Jan 18, 2008

I know this has circulated the e-mail stream, but thought it would be a nice reminder.  I agree with the woman 100%!

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!!! It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.

Her point:

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress

is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that

the US might protect its own

borders, might make it harder

to sneak into this country and,

once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand

the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house.

Let's say that when you discover

me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "No! I like it here.

It's better than my house. I've made all

the beds and washed the

dishes and did the laundry

and swept the floors. I've

done all the things you don't

like to do. I'm hard-working

and honest

(except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:

You are Required to let me stay in your house

You are Required to feed me

You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan

You are Required to Educate my kids

You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family

(my husband will do all of your yard work because

he is also hard-working and honest, except for that

breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out,

I will call my friends who will picket your

house carrying signs that proclaim my

RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have

a nicer house than I do, and I'm just

trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working

and honest, person, except for well,

you know, I did break into your house

And what a deal it is for me!!!

I live in your house, contributing only a

fraction of the cost of my keep, and

there is nothing you can do about it

without being accused of cold,

uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and

bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn

MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can

communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous

this is?! Only in America

Gee thanks, elected officials. YOU ARE ALL SPINELESS WIMPS!

Great description!

There is some irony given what is on the Statue of Liberty!

All in all, we need to fix our borders and immigration system. Here's part of my suggestion:

1. Secure our borders! Document, fingerprint, prosecute all those who attempt to cross!

2. Deny all access to government services and programs (medicare, welfare and enrollment in schools and universities) to all who are here illegally!

3. Prosecute and fine all those who knowingly employ illegal aliens! Make the penalty harsh enough to serve as a deterrent!

Also Justlean -

Think about this. While we have so many illegals pouring into our country to have a "better life" and as you put it, have the right to do so based on the Statue of Liberty's statement..

what about all the people in Africa who need serious help and need refuse? Don't they also deserve the same chance to come heer and have a better life? But because they are not on our border - they can't just sneak in. They have to follow the rules. But because there are so many that do sneak in and take advantage of us, there is LESS ROOM for those who REALLY need it to come. Making those that do it the right way, wait longer. How is that fair?

Doesn't all the others trying to do it the right way deserve the same chance? What about all those that try to come from Cuba or Haiti - wanting it so bad they die trying to get here on small rafts....

I understand your point of view. Even appreciate it. But there has to be some modicome of balance.

Justjean - where your Ellis Island explanation fails for me is this:

During that time, TONS of people came to America wanting a better life. They took LONG ship rides enduring Lord knows what with almost nothing with them. THEN They stood in long lines set up for when they got of the boats and provided their names where they were from, etc and became documented.

That's how many people's names changed spells, etc because sometimes the works taking the information couldn't say it or understand it and wrote it down like it sounded.

Add to that, America still had so much land and room to offer. There was so much being settled.

NOW is a different time, a different world. We no longer have that room, we no longer have all the resources. The laws have been enacted for a very good reason.

Despite Liberal Diatribe, America is still the one place most people want to be. There has to be some type of controls to keep things balanced.

It ain't my fault that they are here! No body asked me!! Their are thousands of them in my area & I don't like it one bit. They can't drive, can't speak enghlish, getting my tax paying dollars from the Social Services by getting food stamps, medicaid, wic, when I know people who were born here cannot get the time of day from Social Services that are legal & really need it.

How fair is that??

I have a slightly different twist to the analogy. No one "broke into our house." We left the door standing wide open with a big neon sign out front saying, "come work in our house for good pay, medical benefits, free food and lots of other perks, and we'll ignore our laws and leave you alone." Then we get home, and act surprised to find the house full of illegals and say, holy shee--it, what are all these people doing here?!"

We have own dang selves to blame for being overrun by illegal immigrants. But fortunately it's in our power to correct our own mistakes for allowing this to happen.

So you are saying that if we setup the same process at the US/Mexican border and made those people go through the same process as those who came through Ellis Island, you would be ok with the ones they let in and documented? Really?

Through a process that was implemented by people who took the country away from those who occupied it. How is that legal?

How about retroactive immigration laws that state anyone whose ancestors six generations ago were not born in this country, now have to go through immigration? How many of you would be willing to sign up for that?

There you go again comparing immigrants that were brought into America thru a process that documented them and not everyone was allowed in, some were shipped back. Yeah that is exactly like millions that scampered across the border breaking a law, no documents showing who they are or anything about them. Thanks, please try again.
