steve - i have problems ...
Published Jan. 12, 2008...that I think only you can help. I'm using a new computer, an emachine, which I don't like but it's new and I'm stuck with it. First of all, let me say that I have two more computers and neither one has ever acted this way. Secondly, I've tried to get help from the manufacturer and forums/help desks all over the Internet but can find no answers, so now, I am doing what I should have done in the first place --- turn to Mr. Crispie!
It is so slow that I don't like using it, however, I've made it my primary desktop. Looking at the logistics, it shouldn't be slow. I'll replace the DSL modem tomorrow but that isn't the problem. It's slow loading any programs.
The main other concern I have, which is driving me crazy, is ALL of the words are purple ... my type, all news articles --- everything is purple and while I have no problem with the color in general, I need black fonts. I have gone into the control panel, everywhere I know to go but still the purple type. I'm not a computer newbie but I can't figure this one out. No one else seems to be able to either. Any advice?
Thanks!
Juli

Whahuh?! RAM should not have cost you NEARLY that much. For $120 I can buy about 2 ~ 3 gigs of memory.
And, yea if it's a new out the box, Vista may be the source of the problems, at current, 32-bit CPUs cannot address an "adequate" amount of memory to run Windows Vista to full capacity... 32-bit processors can only address up to 4096MB (4GB) of RAM whereas Vista needs much more... probably in the order of 8GB+ which is supported by the newest processors (64-bit processors) to run in it's top form.

If you have nothing running and bouncing betweem 47 and 77% CPU usage (and using 814 MB memory) there is probably a service or app that is running wild. In the task manager, click on the processes tab then click on the CPU column to filter on CPU then click on it again to sort by the top users. Note what is using most of the CPU and see if there is anything unusual - scans, loads, updates or applications that are not active.
