change is coming to our comments area

Published Jan 11, 2008

Major change is on the way to the WRAL.com comments area.

The first change is that we are opening all of our news stories for comment beginning Wednesday, January 16.

From local and national news to strange news, political news and even local news briefs, every news story will be open for discussion.

We’ve received lots of feedback about stories being closed for comments, particularly when many others are open, and it has become increasingly clear that the community wants the opportunity to discuss it all. We want to provide that opportunity.

With a change of this magnitude, we have also made the decision to moderate all comments before they appear on the site, with the intent of weeding out the few who try to derail a conversation with off topic or abusive comments.

It is important to note that these changes will NOT apply to GOLO.

We will continue to rely on the GOLO community to bring questionable content to our attention.

GOLO members will have the ability to create their own profiles and blogs, post comments, upload and share image galleries and sound off on community issues 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We do, however, expect GOLO content to fall within our community guidelines and terms of use.

We recognize that full moderation is a tall task and for that reason we have hired a dedicated team of online community moderators.

Our moderators will work to provide consistency, objectivity and fairness while ensuring that comments promote productive community conversation and do not violate our terms of use.

We are also incorporating a voting tool that will let you decide the important stories of the day. In addition to voting on news stories, you will also be able to e-mail friends and encourage them to vote as well.

Story votes will be reset daily, in conjunction with comments, which will open at 7am and close at 7pm, Monday through Friday.

We believe this change will allow room for more opinions and encourage participation.

As always, we welcome your feedback about these changes and remain committed to providing a quality online experience.

-Angela

That is nice Angela as low as the moderators are fair as consistant and not censor comments because their opinion may differ. I was confused on this part "Story votes will be reset daily, in conjunction with comments, which will open at 7am and close at 7pm, Monday through Friday." Does that say that comments are only allowed from 7a-7p M-F or just voting?

"With a change of this magnitude, we have also made the decision to moderate all comments before they appear on the site, with the intent of weeding out the few who try to derail a conversation with off topic or abusive comments."

I guess we get the good with the bad. I like that all stories will be open to commenting. But I DESPISE it when articles require comments to be previewed before being posted. More often than not, I don't post on those articles. They do not flow well at all. Sometimes I post a reply to someone, and it appears an hour later, and 10 other people have posted similar replies. You cannot go back and forth with people. This monitoring ruins the blog, IMO.

Speaking for myself, this change will result in me not posting any more. I will post on personal Golo blogs, but that's pretty much all.

I'll ask nicely...

PLEASE do not moderate all comments before they appear on this site!

That ruins the flow of debate. Sometimes you want things posted timely. Sometimes you want to give a timely reply.

I beg of you, please only closely moderate "hot topic" articles! You will ruin the WRAL blogs if you do this.

I'm not kidding, I will stop posting on WRAL public articles if you proceed with this rule.

Angela- I think you guys are really trying but what are you going to do if someone gets sensored too many times? Are you going to shut down their profile? Just curious.

Thanks Angela. hope you are having a nice day!

Thank you.

I agree that in order to provide fairness to all - including WRAL - we need this. The bashers are far and few between, but they are there. There is a big difference in posting a different opinion compared to rudeness with degrading comments towards another. Thank you Angela, we needed this.

As Golo matures, I see this site becoming a favorite among many residents.

FWIW - Some of the "worst" comments are posted by GOLO members.

TruthBKnown: Consider this. With moderators dedicated to that job ONLY, with no other duties pulling them away, our goal will be to make this very timely and to post as quickly as possible. One of the reasons we knew we needed to make a change was some of the feedback about delays in moderated comments posting to the site. When editors have many many many other tasks revolving around maintaining a news website, in addition to moderating comments that will happen. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Try it.

I like being able to reply to every story. Sometimes it seems as if WRAL was censoring replies to certain topics by keeping the comments closed. But I don't like the idea of moderating every comment before it is posted. That will take forever and slow down the flow of discussion. Why can't you just investigate comments after they are posted and then delete them if they are inappropriate?
GOLO

Response from GOLO:
We have hired moderators who will be on the job from 7am-7pm. They will be devoted "solely" to moderating comments, with no additional duties and we believe this will maintain the flow of discussion. The fact that this is their "only" duty, is an important one. This will decrease the amount of time you may be used to waiting to see your comments on moderated stories.

Angela

I can see why you will be monitoring all comments as that alone tends to help potentially volitle message boards from getting that way. Unfortunately, it also prevents good converstation on topics as it sometimes is hours before a comment is posted. I guess the few who like to incite on the message boards are messing it up for the rest, but in the end, it will prevent a lot of going off topic and insults (especially to the police officers, which I find is the group of the month to insult by posters!!)

Angela- I think you should make the blog list (and favs, profiles ect.) longer. You have all this blank space to the right and to keep 4 or 5 visible is discouraging at times. Can't you have the blog list go the length of the page?

I agree with truth be known. If all stories have to be moderated, then it will mess up the flow. Some times it takes 30 min or more to post one comment. Then, by the time it post, you see that 10 others have posted the same thing. THIS FEATURE WILL TOTALY END THE ABILITY TO HAVE A "DISCUSION".

TBK and con amor= I agree, it is almost not worth posting to boards that are monitored... I hope Angela is right and it will flow faster.

Please take the advise of the real deal tar heel, and let the comments post. Let the golo patrol read the comments and then delete any that are abusive.

What about Golo weapons and spells? Are you guys even working on that yet?

milky -- you think they have weapons of mass destruction? this could change everything....it's shock and awe tactics!

casper- if it is like the current flow we need to call a plumber. I'm kidding Angela.

As a guest to this site and no admission charges, WRAL has every right to make their own rules. Like it or not.

made - that's a good point, but if you follow Angela and her postings, they are trying to be 'community oriented'. They like feedback, which to me is a step above a lot of other communities! As for the news stories, WRAL should monitor the comments, I think it's profiling when they allow comments on certain stories and not others, what are they trying to say? So, if they need to monitor every story to weed out the 'creeps', so be it, but if they are monitoring to post just what they want said, shame on them! My buck fifty, lil more then 2 cents!

Angela, I appreciate the job you all do. I like most of the changes that have come along. But I still don't like the super moderation, even if it is faster (which remains to be seen I guess).

I have had comments "weeded out" when I thought they were neither out of line, nor too far off topic. Sometimes it seems that someone just didn't like my opinion and didn't let it pass.

I would prefer someone moderating full time, and DELETING inappropriate comments. I think that would make it the best of both worlds. We get the fastest possible posting time, and you get the super moderation that you want.

The thing is, even bad posts can be ignored. It's just not usually a big problem, IMO.

I created a blog for further discussion about this rule change:

http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/2290378

http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/2290177

my 2cents is shut it all down. no one can agree on anything anyway, people are always going to complaint about changes. So WRAL, shut it all down, no more golo, no more comments posting.

This is a reply from Angela on my previous posts, "I will clarify that on the blog. Yes, comments will only be open on news stories from 7am-7pm Monday through Friday." I think that presents a problem for the late nighters and weekenders. Many important news stories occur after hours and we will be unable to discuss them. I guess we Goloers can paste the article in a blog to discuss. One other idea that I would like to mention is that it would be nice to have a general blog area called something like "Fast Talk" for the fun stuff and save the current blog area for real discussion of the serious type.

ghostwriter, if that was directed at me, I DO give praise when good changes are done (again, read the FIRST paragraph at the very top of this page...)

All I know is any time I open an article, and see those red sentences that informs me the comments are being reviewed before being posted, I usually just close the article and don't bother. That's the worst thing about the WRAL blogs IMO. And now they're going to make EVERY article work that way.

If it is truly going to be faster, I might be ok with it. If not, I'll just find something else to do with my time. That's just the truth of it. I like it here. I just hope they decide not to go through with this particular change. It will stifle opinions I think.

(again, read the FIRST paragraph at the very top of this page...)

Meaning, THIS page:

http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/2290378

"Yes, comments will only be open on news stories from 7am-7pm Monday through Friday."

Well, that makes sense in that it is when the paid workers who will read and "moderate" the posts are working.......However, it is also when most people are working!! So, are we then encouraging people to post at work since they can't at home?? I thought most employers frown upon work time being used for personal things (such as posting of message boards).

For some reason, WRAL seems to want to shut down converstation, since these new rules will logically bring things in that direction.....

Oh, well, I guess we all have better uses for our time anyway...

I think 90% of people that post here are doing so from work. LOL

Maybe I can get one of these moderator jobs and do it while I am at work, too.

Angela...good to open all articles to comments, bad to screen all. It takes hours for you to screen and often the "news" has changed. I do alot of posting 3-4 am...will someone be there? What are you afraid of? wral.com will become irrelevant...golo is good but many will switch to another local web site for news/views. wral is no longer my homepage, effective in 3 minutes.

I find it EXTREMELY interesting that my earlier comments, which some posters actually responded to, regarding "words" have now been removed. There was absolutely, positively NOTHING offensive in those posts!!

Is this a sign of things to come? Perhaps TBK-R is spot on!! I can easily punch the "log out" button and just be outta here.

Anyone want to be a mod?

http://cbc-raleigh.com/employ/view_job.asp?id=07-195

I understand the need for mods, but it just seems there's a bit too much censorship going on sometimes. I like the freedom to post pretty much what I want (within reason) without it needing to be screened first.

OOPS....apology! (My bad)

They're still present on this other site: http://www.wral.com/golo/blogpost/2290378?d_full_comments=1&d_comments_page=2#comments_block

I think this problem of multiple posts/boards on the same topic CAN generate problems, as TBK-R mentioned.

7a-7p Mon-Friday only. Sorry, the news happens all 7 days, 24 hours. What's next, holidays off?

I just read that job description in their posting. Any idea how much it pays? Also, it says "weekends only"? I thought this was a M-F job?

Looks like a good change, to me!

Just say NO to moderation!!! Free speech and debate doesn’t mean you want get your feelings here every now and then. I’ve already started not commenting on the stories that have to go through the moderator because they take too much effort and don’t flow smoothly. You post a comment and wait and wait and wait to see if it shows up. That’s NOT a way to run a site setup for comments. I think that’s what happened to the last WRAL forum before it finally died. Though, there wasn’t a GOLO at the time.

The changes sound good to me!

Angela - am glad you finally got the resources to have fulltime moderators other than just yourself. I think this is a positive change and am sure that things will continue to evolve as you implement changes that are necessary to grow in a communtiy-friendly manner. Bring on the changes - you know you'll get our feedback -LOL!

Have a great weekend.

"I’ve already started not commenting on the stories that have to go through the moderator because they take too much effort and don’t flow smoothly. You post a comment and wait and wait and wait to see if it shows up. That’s NOT a way to run a site setup for comments."

I wonder how many people feel like us, Lightfoot. I'm telling you, if it's still slow after the changes are implemented, you're going to see a dropoff in comments I believe.

Here's something I don't say every day -

I agree with lightfoot 100%.

Lightfoot - To my knowledge (and I was Internet Marketer / Researcher and Web Analytics) this is the first WRAL forums that is under their control. Any other efforts were farmed out or simple links to listgroups.

I don't consider moderated comments censorship when it is performed by a private company versus a government entity. We are guaranteed freedom of speech by the government but just as places of business are allowed to "Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone", a private social media site has the right (and IMO responsibility) to ensure that any written content that represents them in any form is not vulgar, racist or extremely offensive to their audience. I agree with this and think that now that they have full time moderators this will ensure the same standards across the board ALL the time - I welcome that!!! I think we need to give it a chance and see what it is like before making presumptions, it may turn out to be one of the best things yet.

Some of us would like NO moderation at all. I'm not asking for that. Feel free to have the full-time moderator sitting there DELETING posts as necessary. I'm just talking about the speed and flow of posting. If a proofreader has to approve it first, it will be slower, without a doubt. And what if the proofreader takes a bathroom break? We sit there 10 minutes waiting for them to return and the posting halts.

Point being, a lot of us DON'T want this PRE moderation of our posts, and we will stop posting, and there will be a loss of some opinions. If that's what WRAL wants, go for it.

These sound like great improvements! It's great to know that WRAL.com listens to our comments and opinions and is willing to make changes based on them.

Sounds good. When do we all get to go on the all expenses paid Hawaii cruise, though?

Scarecrow Cow, do you enjoy posting on threads where your comments have to be approved before they get posted?

Be honest.

I, for one, have gotten to the point where I just won't post on a story that is being moderated. I don't have time to sit around and wait for them to read my post, post it (along with 60 others) and then wait another hour while anyone who wants to respond to me gets THEIR post filtered and posted with 60 others.

It's a monumental waste of time. If I see red letters at the bottom, I move on.

Some people will like moderated comments because it gives them a sense of accomplishment with they make it past the censors. For them I suggest an enema. It will give them the same sense of accomplishment, but will allow me to post and be able to see it posted before the turn of the next century.

Should have written "when", not "with". My boo boo.
