house: i think my floors will survive
Published Dec 29, 2007Views: 374
Well, after my last blog, I was obviously very upset about my floors. They were completely saturated twice, worse the second time. Now that they've had a chance to dry out for the most part, I think they will be OK. They are buckled and there are areas that are cracked and raised but after much consideration and figuring, I think if we remove one strip at the wall, we will be able to get the rest to lay back down, mostly flat. A bit of sanding and perhaps they'll make it.
The framers did show back up and worked hard Thursday and Friday. The garage/bonus room is nearly complete. They made sure before leaving yesterday to get roofs in place with tar paper! I do appreciate their effort for that.
In spite of my original frustration, I have to give these guys credit. They do beautiful work and they are very good at looking at plans to make the most use of available space. What was originally going to be my office (a box of a room, very closed off and small), leading into a hallway to the bonus room, has now become a very spacious, open room w/lots of space for my files and even a cubby closet for office supplies/storage. Leading into the bonus room are two more cubby closets, one each for my kids toys/games.
I will be updating my photo gallery to show the latest in pictures.
Next on the agenda is the roof. Our roofer will begin Monday. We have purchased our shingles and they are already there at the land. I think the color is Weathered Wood and they are the 30 yr shingles I believe. While that is taking place this week, we hope to begin our search for the windows and siding. Next weekend, hopefully we'll frame up the front porch!
It's really coming along nicely, but it seems like there is still so much work to be done. I really should be there today, but I felt like the kids and me needed a day to just kick back here and relax. My husband is off with his brother for a day in the woods. After the stress of the rain and the worry over the floors, I think we ALL needed a "mental health day!"

Before we flooded with Floyd, we were replacing subflooring. We had done the bathroom and kitchen. Hadn't even put the tile down in bathroom yet. The new wood made like huge potholes and sunk while the old didn't do anything.
