movie review: i am legend

In the movie I Am Legend, cancer will be cured in the year 2009. Sounds good, right? Not so fast. With the cure comes a new horrible virus that turns nearly everyone that comes in contact with into horrible creatures of the night. Everyone except military scientist Robert Neville, played brilliantly by Will Smith.
New York City is isolated, and used in an attempt to quarantine those infected with the disease. Somehow immune, Will Smith spends his days trying to find a cure for the virus in his basement laboratory.
As far as Will Smith knows, he is the last man left on earth. The scenes of the deserted New York City are without a doubt amazing. Smith ad his dog Sam are shown throughout the film hunting on Park Avenue, driving golf balls off of the aircraft carrier Intrepid, picking corn in Central Park, and shopping for videos in midtown Manhattan.
Awe inspiring during the day, yes, but at night NYC becomes a terrifying stomping ground for virus-infected creatures that are getting desperate for food. Smith's character barricades himself in his apartment each night, hoping that he can find a cure, before the creatures catch him. These zombie-like creatures are like humanized, hairless, rabid dogs that can only live in complete darkness.
I watched the film without doing much homework, so I was certainly not expecting the degree of horror that the movie dishes out. There were several scenes that had me on the edge of my seat. This movie was so well-written, and set in the near future that it really opened up some interesting conversation as to the direction our world might some day be heading.
As always in my reviews, I will never give away the ending, but I will tell you that the final moments of this film is a frantic flurry for survival that you will have to see for yourself.
The only "flaw" in the film, and it is very minor, is that the ending seems slightly sudden, and rushed. However, I really enjoyed this film from start to finish. I can't say enough about the special effects, the cinematography and Will Smith's acting. There are not very many actors, in my opinion, that could pull off being the basically only character in a movie. It reminded me of Tom Hanks' role in Cast Away.
If you are a fan of films that contain action, drama, stunning visuals, emotion, good acting... and don't mind being scared at times, this film is a must see.
My rating: 3 Stars
Note: Use discretion when bringing children to this movie, I saw at least one unsuspecting parent with a young child leave the theater during a scary part!
