house: the walls still talk

It is still so much fun uncovering clues from the past. Since we began this project, there has been some speculation as to whether my husband's grandfather actually helped build the house. He would have been 16 at the time. We know he installed the hardwood floors, but as for building the structure itself??? No one could say for certain.
As luck would have it, we found a definitive clue. In the process of pulling down the sheetrock/plaster, we have been finding signatures of many relatives. This has been quite a treat for us and we've saved boards that had to be removed or simply left the signed posts or boards in place. As we uncovered the wall studs upstairs, we found his signature. Now we know he had a hand in the actual building!
This was perhaps the most exciting find so far. He was very loved by his family. He was a strong man-practically a legend in his own time. To this day, if you meet someone who knew him, they will tell you stories of him that would boggle the mind. He would carry 100lb sacks of fertilizer across fields, one on each shoulder. This might explain how they got a 600 lb tub upstairs. He would climb pecan trees (up into his 60s) and shake them. He got frustrated at his grandsons at one of his last Thanksgivings here b/c they just didn't do it right. So he climbed the tree to show them how it's done. He could shoot the limb out from under a peacock in a tree and shoot down mistletoe with a slingshot. He loved his family and they loved him. He was an incredible man.
I'm happy to know for sure that he had a hand in the building of this house.
