house: garage and porch

Framing began on the garage today! It's amazing how quickly it can go if you actually know what you are doing! We broke down and hired a framing crew for the garage. I figure that at our pace, it would have taken us at least a month, if not more, if we tried to do that ourselves. There will be too much roof work - tearing off the single-story roof and raising the walls, and tying in the new roof to the old structure - it would have been over our heads. In any case, the walls are up today and they will return Monday to begin the second floor (BONUS ROOM - Woo Hoo!). Like I said, these guys could move. I guess if you do this every day, you don't have to spend so much time trying to figure it out as you go! :-)
While the framer was working on the garage, we had to tear siding down on the back of the house where it will tie in. We are moving one wall, so we tore that entire wall out of what will become the mud room entering from the garage. We also spent time patching in a couple of holes. Tomorrow we plan to finish patching the holes, tearing the window out on the right side as you face the house and frame that for a side door onto the porch (off the kitchen).
Also this past week, we had the metal installed for the wrap porch. Now it's beginning to look like a porch rather than a moat. Concrete will be poured either Monday or Tuesday. We have also removed all the cabinets from the kitchen. They are in a storage building at the moment.
I'll be posting updated pics on my image gallery! It's finally beginning to look like a house under construction rather than a demolition site.
