film ~ the bourne ultimatum

I place this film series at the top of the action genre. They have a strong backstory, the plot moves well and the acting and direction tend to be spot-on. The thing that has kept these films at edge is their believability 1) that this sleight of hand has happened to this man, and 2) that it's been so seamlessly orchestrated it logically could happen to any of us. That balance of acceptable elevated dramatics and Everyman appeal has kept the story and its delivery grounded through this series. That said, this installment of the series made a few leaps that obliterated my suspension of belief regarding logistical maneuvers and amazing feats of impossibility. Flawlessly entering areas of top of the line security, racing through tightly crowded mazes of Moroccan markets and sprawling rooftops with all principles neatly in sight and converging at the same point, and the highest of intelligence available to be duped and reduped pushed the limits of what I felt this film could ask of me. Chase scenes dragged on a bit, as did skillfully crafted fight scenes. While those bits did not seal the deal for me, the subtler and more widely accepted currents of tracking anyone anywhere to the nth degree of his/her existence remained consistently upsetting. Damon's portrayal of his character remains tight as ever, though this segment in particular did not allow for much development, emotional or otherwise, of Bourne/Webb. Information came out around his true identity, though not as much as we (and he) were set up to expect. I would welcome another sequel, though this one would still be a high note to end on, as well.
