this crazy weather
Published Dec. 9, 2007Last summer, I picked up running. Since I'd never done any kind of fitness running before, I followed the "Couch-to-5k Running Plan" that's meant to get newbies like me out of the e-z-chair and outside. It was great, and I got to where I was running about 5k three or four times a week. Great! I've started a healthy habit.
Well, life kicked in. You know how it goes. I got relocated for work, so that meant packing, moving, and unpacking. All that put a serious dent in my running time. But I fought back and got back to running at least a couple times a week. Then, I got the new job here at WRAL, which meant -- you guessed it -- packing, moving, and unpacking again.
So much for my healthy habit.
Now, if I want to run more than on the weekends, I have to get up at the crack of dawn or run in the dark after I get home from work. Add to that -- it can be chilly out there this time of year, and I haven't warmed up to the idea of running in the freezing cold a la Rocky.
But then there was this weekend. Seriously. It is December, and not only did I get to go running this afternoon, I ran in shorts and a t-shirt. Oh, and our windows were open all day, too.
Crazy!
To be sure, I love winter and would much prefer it to be cold and snowy. If the weather isn't going to cooperate, though, it's hard to beat days like this -- especially on the weekend.
Anyone else make good use of this warm weather reprieve?

One thing I remember very clearly from that storm was just how quiet it gets when there's that much snow on the ground and when the city is basically shut down. I think that's about as quiet as it ever gets outside anymore...

We had a major ice storm here several years ago. No power. Trees down everywhere. Power lines strewn across streets and what few sidewalks we have.
Two girls who lived across the street from me were on the NCSU cross country team and apparently were addicted to running. Yes, they were out running in that mess, dodging falling limbs and jumping over downed wires.
They seemed perfectly content. Insane, but content.
I don't care how much of a competative athlete one is, take a break for a day or two.

You talking about running has made me want to get up and go! I would get up and go, but my get up and go, has got up and went!
