cats?
Published Dec 5, 2007I'm thinking about getting a cat. I used to hate them, but after meeting some of the sweeties at the Wake SPCA my whole opinion on them has changed. Before I went the only cats I had encountered were mean little monsters that would hiss and scratch at me AND their owners. I couldn't figure out why anyone would willingly keep something so vicious in their home. Now, though, I know that cats can be loving, playful, and fun. I went there to check out the dogs but I left wanting a cat.
So are there any cat owners out there who have any insights? What's it like to have a cat? Do they scratch the furniture? Do they climb on things and knock stuff over?

Cats are very entertaining and fun. Even my 10 year old, usually very lazy cat will occasionally go totally haywire chasing a bug or a twisty-tie.

One thing I would recommend is if you do bring a cat home, start by keeping him in a bathroom with food, water, litter and an expensive garment you've worn (like a tshirt). Cats HATE change. When he finally comes out from behind the toilet, he'll have everything he needs and your scent to bond with.

Could be me, but I've never had luck "training" one. Instead, I've just had to make some concessions. Don't want them on your bed? Buy a (tall) baby gate. Worried about your food? Keep an eye on it. Want to avoid having them chew your toothbrush? Buy a cover for it. (Yes, this happened to me -- yecch!)
Some people call these traits "sneaky" or "disobedient" but it's just cats doing what they naturally do. In spite of making a few concessions, I'm sure you'll still find cats to be relatively low-maintenance. Buy toys and other things to appeal to those traits, and most times a cat will use those instead of messing with your stuff -- scratch post, kitty bed, etc.
Above all, make sure you're not allergic.
Enjoy!

They are awesome pets! Mine go in/out, mainly stay out since I have a wooded lot with a creek in my backyard.
IF you keep the cat indoors, all you have to do is trim the nails yourself and get a good scratching post.
I have had cats all my life....... they are like potato chips, you cant just have one.
If you have ANY questions, let me know!!!!! Either way, let me know if you get one or two!!!!
