A documentary about the high rate of drunken driving accidents involving legal and illegal Hispanic immigrants was the focus of a WRAL News documentary that aired Wednesday at 7 p.m.

my answer to this situation isthast they re not giving the illegsal immigrate a chancel. I am married to a illgel immigrate and we have been working on his resident for 3 years now and still working on it. He was legally gave his liscense and now it's time to renew his linscenes and now dmv will not renew his liscenses because he has no socialsecurity number . So now if they are not going renew liscences for the ones who have them then they asre going to have alot of them driving weith no liscences. If they give them liscences at least they hasve information on htem if they are involve in a wreck or drunk driving. If they have no liscences they have no insurance. I believe in the years to come we asre going to have problems with them with no driving liscense and no insasurance to pay for the people who are involve. We the people are going to have to pay. I think dmv need to think this very seriously. Like us we are trying to do every thing the right way.

Wow! What a tear jerker. My prayers are with the families whose lives were changed. I do agree that education is a key factor. I also feel that stiffer penalties should be enforced including better sharing of information within the state and the oountry. Deportation should be an automatic consequence if it can be proven that the offender is not here legally. We shouldn't have to worry about the possibility of being harmed by a drunk driver much less an illegal drunk driver. Thank you WRAL for addressing this issue. I do hope you will continue to look into this problem and I pray that our law makers will address the problem with tougher laws.

I just saw this and seeing the mother crying and talking about her son was so sad. The wife is now in a nursing home. The sad fact is, you can't stop anyone from driving. You can take their licence, insurance, and tags, but the only way to literally stop someone from driving is to put them behind bars. I don't think the MURDERER should be behind bars, though. I think he should be six feet under.

Just finished watching the documentary. It was the best program produced yet! As a former Law Enforcement Officer, I can strongly attest to the level of frustration felt by these families. I agree that Law Makers should have been addressing these issues long ago! I can tell you by experience, that it is not an issue of whether an Illegal has a North Carolina Drivers License or not. A very small percentage of the DUI (Illegals) arrests I made, ever came to Court. They would simply acquire a new identity, or move to another County, or both. If they had no Drivers License to begin with, that was only another Misdemeanor violation, and they would still be released on a small bond. It makes me proud to see Sue Myrick working hard to correct a broken system...but it saddens me to see the lack of support from her fellow law makers! And as for the comment posted by avalos, if her husband does not have a Social Security number, how does he pay his fair share of income taxes?

I thought Gerald did a fantastic job. He covered the first court appearance of Pastor Sanchez, Lee County, who killed those 3 students while driving drunk.

An incredible Focal Point. Great job by everyone. Doesn't this say that our government and law enforcement needs to do everything possible to prevent this type of happening. Local law enforcement should be given whatever resources they need to deal with and correct this problem. As Tina's father said, "illegal" is illegal and they should not even be here and certainly not be drinking and driving. El Pueblo always seems to put the "cultural differences" spin on these types of news events. Obviously they are not doing a very good job of educating those "young,lonely Hispanic men" who are so woefully here illegally and have nothing to do but drink. Give me a break!! Our borders need to be secured, our laws need to be enforced, penalties need to be extremely severe and they need to be in Mexico, not North Carolina or anywhere else in the US. This has been a growing issue for some time and seems to be getting worse. Thanks for this Focal Point, well done and certainly needed.
