house; daily progress

Things are really moving right along at the house.  The brick masons are almost finished with the additions.  The only part left is the foundation for the front porch.  A HUGE thank you to Wally (Cresswell Masonry) and crew!  These guys really work hard.  We have not had to shim anything AND there is nothing to clean up on the brick!  Great work!

While they were busy on the foundation, we have been busy inside.  We knew that one corner had significant termite damage.  That has all been completely repaired and reframed now.  We found a couple of other areas that needed help, so we've repaired those as well.  It's to be expected with a house of this age.  I'm amazed there hasn't been MORE damage over the years.

Upstairs, we have about 1/4 left to gut out (remove all sheetrock).  The wall studs upstairs are in great shape.  The floor in the bathroom had to be removed and repaired.  Downstairs, we have 2 rooms remaining that we need to assess - the kitchen and living room.  We know there is damage under the kitchen sink, but we have a plan for repair.

Next on the agenda, framing the additions.  We expect to have the addition on the side of the house framed in within the next week.  The garage will take a bit longer, but hopefully not too long.

We had a surprise visit from my husband's mother and grandmother.  This was his grandmother's house and was built by HER father.  Having her come see the house was a real treat.  I just hope she is happy about what we are doing.  It must have been a shock to see it in the state of disrepair, but hopefully she can envision the completed project.  She says she is very anxious to see it complete.  She isn't the only one!!!

Be sure to check out my photo gallery.  I've added more recent pictures.

Unless this was a home owned by a family member somewhere down the chain and great sentimental value I would have built a new one for less cost and aggrivation.

Wonderful, and the history of the house awesome!

i GUESS THE DEERSLAYER DID NOT READ YOUR BLOG. You're tellilng him that the house was your husbands great grandparents. We've been followoing this project from day one and I am also so thrilled for you. There is no way it would have been cheaper to built this house in todays costs. Your children will be gr owing up in great-greatparnets house. How neat is that......

I guess I should have read all of the blog before commenting. LOL

opps-- i meant great-great grandparents right???

Alright, progress is coming fast now! Wally is a good guy, he repaired some chimneys on a house of ours in Sampson County, hard worker!

Let's see, the house was built by D. Johnson and passed to Dorothy Johnson, who is my husband's grandmother. My husband's mother grew up in the house and my husband spent many summers there, barning tobacco (though he never 'lived' in the house). So that makes my kids the fifth generation.

Deerslayer-You would probably drop your teeth if you knew how much money we have in this house. We might have been able to build for equal money, but the materials of today would be substandard in comparison. So really, we are getting out cheaper or at today's costs, but with much better/stronger materials. Our costs thus far have not been very much, believe it or not!

BTW, Dorothy married and became Dorothy Pleasant. She is pictured, with my mother-in-law, in my image gallery! I was so happy to have her come see the progress! I think she's excited that we are saving this house!

I am so happy that you decided to share with us what must be, in moments, overwhelming (at least to me it would be!!).

Thanks again!!

I love house projects, specially when they go well . . .
