need advice

I am posing a question to all GOLO people.  My 5 year old asked me a difficult question tonight.  He asked me why doesn't his parents live together.  I gave him an answer I knew he would understand - Mommy and daddy couldn't get along living in the same house.  Sound fair to yall?  It is a complicated answer that I knew he wouldn't understand.  Mistakes were made on my part as well as my ex-husband.  Because of some of my faults, my ex feels that it is my responsibility to explain the way things are.

My question is:  What is the appropriate age to explain the dynamics of what happened?

I have told my girls Mommy and Daddy could no longer live together anymore...but we will be Friends for you girls. My ex and I have a very and some people think unusual relationship. He still attends my Family functions...Weddings, Thanksgiving, big parties, and even comes and stays at the house with us. He lives in Florida still. We speak on the phone. We still work together as Parents...I say No he says No or tells me why it should be done in a certain way...we discuss it. We value each others Friendship. We have a lot of respect for one another. We do not speak badly about the other. We do not blame one or the other as to why...we are both at fault. I always tease him we should write a book...How to remain Friends after divorce.

BTW my girls hate it because they can't play the play Mommy against Daddy game like a lot of their Friends do *LOL*

I'd have to say the appropriate age is when they ask. I'll have to explain that one day and I honestly don't know what I'll say. Right now we get along and my son talks to him on the phone a lot, I think he doesn't understand what's going on, but maybe he does. I know when he sees his dad he says 'by mommy' almost instanty, and vice versa. I don't like people who do not give their children respect, such as an explanation, and use another parent as the scapegoat. That is beyond childish.

If you feel like you are raising your children the right way then you should feel good with the response. I don't think there is a right or wrong way, only your way to communicate with your child. There has to be some good resources somewhere for that, for guidance of course. Good luck!

I don't plan on giving my son all of the pertinent details of my exes and my breakup. I basically told him that mom and dad could not live together anymore because they could not get along. Once I was ready to marry again, I explained that mommy found someone she was happy to be with and who was good to her and my children. My son likes his tepdad, but it still hurts him that mommy and daddy aren't together. So, my exes gf decided she would like to setup a vacation where both mom and dad and their better halfs and the children all went on vacation to show my son that we could all get along. I think it worked well. And I was so indebted to her for thinking of my son. My son now knows he is a lucky boy (before he was sad that his friends had a mom and dad together in their home)...he has not just one mommy and daddy and brother and sister, but a stepmom and stepdad and 2 more brothers who love him unconditionally. He says he has a big family of love now. :)

IMO, you don't need to tell the child the details. I think you have said enough, saying you didn't get along living together. And isn't that the truth? No matter what led to not getting along...you just didn't get along anymore. No need for intimate details.

I agree with I Wonder. You have said enough..for now. Just remember no matter how you feel about the kids Father...it is still their Father. Never, ever say bad things about him to the kids.

acidburn - that is the PERFECT solution to showing the kids that both parents still love them! So many times the kids end up feeling the animosity between the ex's and that is just too hard for them to grasp.

Wonderful for the kids to see that the adults, their parents and new significant others ALL care about the kids!

all you need to tell your kids is it was not their fault....period.....no need to go into how the parents were not mature enough to work out the problems after they were mature enough to reproduce. People give up too easily on marriage now...all you good christains who took them vows before your god...but how much did those vows really mean to you...when you cant stay married but on the average of 5 to 10 years or so?

Both parents should answer this question."Son when Daddy comes over tomotrrow,we will sit down and have a little talk".It's best to involve both parents as much as possible. That automatically softens all questions when you have to give an answer to a child. When both are present,it puts the child in his/her "comfort zone".

I think just saying after they are older, "It was a personal matter between mom and dad,we decided this was the best way for us. You were in NO way at fault" and drop it. Whether they are 5 or 25, do they really need all the details?

Whether they are 5 or 25, do they really need all the details?

>>Yes,we don't treat our adult children at 25 like we do at 5.No One needs all the details.but they do however deserve something. It's all about deliverance at 5...keep it simple and never ignore your child's questions.
