house: the gutting begins
Published Nov 7, 2007Views: 589
Now that the house is down on the foundation and all of the support beams have been removed, we can now begin the process of gutting the walls and repairing any damaged framing. We knew there would be some areas that required extensive repairs, either from termites or rot. So far, we have been very pleased to see that the amount is very minimal. There is one corner that will need to be repaired from ground to roof. We knew that going in to this project and repairs will not be very costly.
Much to our pleasure, we have found more boards with signatures as we have removed the sheetrock/plaster. This has been one of the best treats. I told my husband I would like to get a marker and sign the boards before we reapply the sheetrock. I thought it would be fun to have each of us (in my family as well as those who have given us a hand in this) sign and perhaps write a comment on the boards-sort of our own time capsule.
We did find sheet music between the sheetrock and wall studs. It's very old and basically shredded, but my daughter was very excited about this find. She has kept some pieces.
Next step: We will continue to tear out the sheet rock and repair any wall studs that need repair/replacing. Meanwhile, the brick masons are back to do the foundation for the additions. If all goes according to plan, we should be able to begin framing next week for the additions. Then things will really begin to move faster. We have resolved ourselves to the fact that we will not be in by Christmas, but we hold our hopes that we will be in sometime in January. While we are certainly eager to move in, we want to take our time to do this right!
EDITED: I forgot to mention how incredible the workmanship has been between the mover and the brick masons and of course, the original builders of this incredible house! When the house was finally set down onto the foundation, there is not one single shim to help level things. We have gone to all the rooms and check with a 4 foot level and the floors are level in all directions, every room except 1 corner of 1 room. That, we can only surmise, was never completely level originally. And it is only a small bit out of level! Between the move and a new foundation, I am constantly amazed at how solid, well-built this house was and will be!

I'll try to add more pics into my photo gallery. I'm still amazed at how easily this project is moving along. Sure, we've had some bumps along the way, but no show stoppers ... yet!!
