house: approved foundation
Published Oct 24, 2007Views: 303
After one minor setback, we finally have our foundation inspected and approved. Because of the slope of the land, we had to lift the house an additional 2 feet in order to complete the foundation. But within a day Mr. McCrary had the house raised and our brick masons had added several more runs of bricks/blocks so that we were at the correct height.
The next step was to place flashing and bolt pressure treated boards onto the foundation. That was a group effort among friends on Saturday. Working until dark, the men (with my occassional help) were able to complete that work.
Yesterday, the inspector visited and sure enough, we passed! Now we can FINALLY set the house down on the foundation and remove the beams. That is supposed to happen today, but alas, we are enjoying a much needed rain.
Have I mentioned that I firmly believe it is within my ability to end the drought? Apparently, every time we reach a significant milestone with the house in which dry weather is needed, it decides to rain. I am convinced that if we begin the roof work, it will rain from the moment we remove the shingles and last until it is sealed back up. *sigh* Well, we desperately need the rain, so if we have to wait a bit before setting the house down, at least it's for a good cause!
Once the house is sitting on the foundation, we have to fill in the foundation areas where the steel beams are supporting the house. We have discussed our options with the inspector and have a game plan for "patching" in these areas. Then the framing can commence.
So far, we are still having a blast. We are learning so much in this process. It's obviously going slower than we would prefer, but it is being done right! So no complaints there. We've had a few glitches that were easily remedied, so again, no complaints. All in all, it's going incredibly smooth, all things considered. Of course we haven't begun tying in the roof lines and additions yet. The fun may still be to come!
