i’m a fair virgin

Well, sort of. I actually tan quite well and I’m a happily married man. But, I’ve never been to the State Fair, and quite frankly I’m a little hesitant to start.

Besides my fear of Carnies and the fact that I don’t like cabbage, I’m a creature of comfort and hesitant to break my unimpressive streak. Maybe I’m afraid of finding myself stuck in a horde of red-eyed fair-goers in need of a deep fried fix, or maybe I just can’t bring myself to shell out hard earned cash when it could go to something far more practical, like, say, the Education Lottery. Now, I’d buy that for a dollar.

You see, when I think of the fair I envision some guy named Earl with just enough “smarts” to be dangerous, building amusement rides after a roll in the hay with the yak lady and as many teeth as he has completed years of a high school education. Think, the Waffle House plus NASCAR, divided by the horsepower of the General Lee.

I wouldn’t be surprised if my fears where unfounded and the Fair was actually a magical place where kid’s imaginations can run wild and parents can, if only for a day, travel back to a time when things were much simpler. A time when bad-knees didn’t mean arthroscopic surgery, but that you recently fell down and got an ouchie, and mortgages where but a glimmer in the eyes of their ceramic piggy banks.

So, as this week quickly approaches its end, I’m faced again with my annual decision – to attend, or not to attend. That is the question. Whether ‘tis nobler to sample the turkey leg or to remain a groundling, looking on from amongst the crowd. Well, “If cowards die many times before their death,” perhaps this is the year for me…

I face the same problem, but I find myself actually missing the general good time you can have a the fair and so I am choosing to attend. However, I will NOT go at night, when the debauchery we both fear will be most prevalant. I plan to attend perhaps between 11 and 3 on saturday or sunday, and not alone either.

I have been going for the 20 + years I've lived here. As Dandy Jenn suggested...go during the day. You can enjoy the outdoor exhibits (the gardening competitions) and not have the high school teenie boppers running and screaming through the crowds. There are lots of animals to look at and hold (ducklings and chicks over on the Hillsborough Street side), and there are the buildings that have lots of great art and 4H projects. I say "GO"! The food is also very good..where else can you get a fried Milky Way....MMMMMMmmmm

Good Idea,Dandy..Can day is the worst day you possibly go on.

I'm with you, the State Fair creeps me out too. I have been to a few in my younger years and I can honestly say that I have no desire to attend now.

I'm 32, and I've been every year of my life. When I was younger I used to go on Friday and Saturday nights to meet up with all of my friends, but now I just go with a girlfriend and we get there at 8:00 AM. The crowds and lines aren't nearly as bad. I don't ride the rides anymore, but I love to walk through all the exhibits and eat some of the food. I dream all year about the maple sugar cotton candy. I love it!

Thanks for the advice. Can day and the rain make it an easy decision today, but perhaps I'll break down and head out this weekend.
