are you taking the drought seriously? wral’s david crabtree wants to know

Gov. Mike Easley has called for further cutbacks in water consumption by every North Carolina resident to conserve limited water supplies that, he said, will likely continue to shrink in the coming months. He stopped short of declaring an emergency but said that could happen if people don’t begin to be serious about water conservation.

We want to hear from you. Have you cut back water usage? If so, how? If not, why?

Would you seriously consider shorter showers? Have you thought of buying a rain barrel? Shaving with a minimum of water? Brushing your teeth with a minimum of water?

Should well water, from the water table, be banned from irrigating lawns? How concerned are you that water could be rationed by spring?

David used many of your comments in a story he produced over the weekend.  Thank you for your feedback.

I've been conserving water since early summer when I drove over Falls Lake on I-85 and saw a grassy soccer field. Now it looks like the infield of a baseball diamond! What I don't understand is why Wake and the surrounding counties continue to grow when the roads, schools and natural resources clearly can't keep up?

mmedmundson, The Lord helps people who help themselves. Praying isn't the answer, concervation is. Why should God, or anybody else, bail us out of a situation that is of our own making?

If the drought were that bad, our officials/leaders would slow growth in the area trememdously. If they aren't worried, neither am I. Just like the millions of gallons of water wasted with the gas fire on Kildaire Farm Rd. I saw one town official on TV say Cary wasn't worried about their water usage as they had plenty.

I have been conserving water ,But praying to the lord above will help, and go to church the lords house is a wonderful place to pray and pray at home also

God bless everyone

Enough with the comments on praying for rain. If anything, the lord watches as we tear down forests to build our subdivisions, we pollute the air with our autos, we let growth go uncontrolled. I'll tell you with the lord should do...let it rain for forty days and forty nights and wipe the planet clean of us.

We've been taking short showers, brushing our teeth with the water off and using other small conservation gestures for years now. We've never watered our lawn, and quite frankly rarely wash our cars. More recently, in light of the drought, we've started putting buckets out under the gutters to catch the rainfall. I use this water for houseplants, my herbs and tomato plants and to keep my ornamental shrubs alive. We've become much more conscious of how many dishes we use, and also how often we change clothes. Obviously we need clean clothes for week each day, but I can reuse. for several days in a row, the clothes that I wear for just a short time in the morning and evening around the house. less clothes, less laundry. I'm glad to have seen some additional ideas on this blog for conservation. Every little bit helps

WE ALL NEED TO PRAY TO THE LORD TO HEEL OUR LAND AND TAKE AWAY THIS DROUGHT GOD BLESS

I was driving up towards Blue Ridge road the other day and noticed a massive clearing of land in preparation for what is obviously going to be a new subdivision. In light of our "exceptional drought" status and the urging of water conservation, how can anyone take it seriously when our government officials continue to over-grow the area beyond what our roads, schools, and water supply can provide.

When I begin to see some attempts at better managing growth is when I'll take water restrictions seriously. I conserve water every day by turning the shower off when soaping up, flushing when necesary, water off when shaving/brusing teeth, and no irrigation system to ignorantly keep lawns green.

Real water conservation is a lifesytle not a reaction; real growth management should be a common practice and not just political rhetoric.

We, the populace, need to begin to understand this; our government officials need to begin to act and shut their mouths.

In Bermuda, where there is no fresh water, houses must catch their own water on their roofs and store it in a tank. Needless to say, they are water conservation experts. They have a saying when it comes to flushing the toilet, "If it's clear, leave it here. If it's brown, flush it down.".

I wonder about all the talk about conserving water if whether or not that much water is conserved. It seems that the lake levels are continuing to decline. What I find disturbing is the possible prevalence of the Reverse Osmosis water systems. These waste 3-4 gallons of water for every gallon of drinking water produced. I know because I have one installed. I put the waste water from my system into a 35 gallon container for later use to water plants or wash my clothes. Also, a lot of water from bathing or dishwashing can be collected as gray water for irrigation purposes.

I agree with the comments of many. The drought of a few years ago was a warning that was ignored by our elected officials. If they had taken that seriously they would have stopped approving so many new subdivisions. The fact that they still have not called for a region wide moratorium on new construction suggests they still aren't very worried. I find that very scary. There is "no" water for a 10 minute shower but there is for a new subdivision?????

I had an email exchange with the acting head of the Durham water agency weeks before they finally woke up to their emergency. At the time I was told in no uncertain terms that the Durham water authority completely disagreed with my assessment that we were in a water crisis. I think our biggest problem is that our elected officials and water bureaucrats kept waiting for a hurricane and have acted in bad faith for years so that people could keep watering their lawns. Now Durham has less than 60 days of water. Time for change at the top. Let's get responsible manager's who understand that more often than not, over the past decade, North Carolina can be considered a drought state. How many times have we been pulled out by a hurricane and look where we are now!

Everyone pray for rain ,I think the lord is trying to teach us something, maybe he is trying to let us know to be thankful for things in life like water and other things, take time to talk with him

This forum is supposed to be intended for getting feedback on how people are conserving or not conserving water during this drought. Comments about praying to the lord should be offered up in church somewhere. Leave it alone here.

After all, if the lord cared one iota, we wouldn't be in this mess. The lord has nothing to do with the weather. Unfortunately, the lord has nothing to do with our government officials either; they really need to be prayed for; pray that someday they "get" the idea of effectively managing growth and our public resources.

The person that made the comment stating, "I'll tell you with the lord should do...let it rain for forty days and forty nights and wipe the planet clean of us" better be careful what they wish for and speak from their mouth, especially if they are not saved. Because the funny thing is, the Lord WILL wipe the planet clean of us one day...but, it will not be water, but fire that will destroy this earth. And, according to this water drought, crime increase, careless governmental decisions, etc., your wish of the "Lord wiping the planet clean of us" will be coming sooner than you could ever imagine. God Bless.

PEOPLE WE NEED TO CONSERVE WATER STOP WATERING GRASS.WHATS THE NEED IN IT,I conserve water and my bill went down And people you need to pray for rain, enough people are not praying ,some people don't think it helps ,but it will help

thanks

To the person named wisdom amen to what you said,I am a saved person,I do conserve water in every way I can think of.I"ve cut back on washing clothes and make sure I have a fill load in the dishwasher before using it and a other things Like praying

I would like to thank everyone for their praying but it doesn’t appear to be helping. So lets all dress up like the native Americans and dance around a fire. If that doesn’t work we may have to start offering sacrifices to the rain god. COME ON if you spent the time you use praying to do something useful, I think the world would be a better place.

"Humm" is right on. We are fully capable of coming up with better solutions to our water problems than praying for rain...ridiculous. For those who want to pray, pray (for whatever it's worth) to have, for example, no child die of starvation...ever. If prayers were actually heard, no child would ever, ever go hungry. If the lord allows children to starve, praying for rain is futile. When the atmospheric elements come together in the right way, it will rain...it's that simple, really.

in response to goloperson who commented that "the Lord has nothing to do with the weather" I would just like to point out the fact that of all the things that God has put in our control, the weather is not one of them. So if He does not have anything to do with the weather, then who does??? I like to tell you that He does have something to do with the weather, and with everything else. His love exceeds more than your imagination. In fact, the Bible says that "if my people who are called by my Name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sins and will HEAL their LAND." So it is my belief that if we turn to the One who Created the universe itself, then we will see the rain come. So as for me, I will do my part in conserving water, it is the responsible and morally right thing to do. However, I will not stop praying for rain to the One who can do something about it.

Thank you for praying and conserving water ,People think that just because we don't get the rain right away the lord is not hearing our prayers ,but he does hear our prayers he will send the rain when he see fit .so thank you to the person called ricknstacytyler Bless you

To those who are praying, I hope your prayers are answered. If, however, as forecasted for this weekend, it does rain, it might just be because when warm air meets cooler air it tends to precipitate. If, in fact, God is willfully moving these weather fronts around for us, God's time should be better spent and he/she should be ashamed for doing so little to better our planet. Keep praying though if it makes you feel better. It's good to feel good.

Thank the lord for the rain we are getting he has part in it to,believe it or not ,even if some people don"t think praying helps I believe

bless you all

I love the idea of flushing only twice a day. There is only one problem. Where would my dogs drink from if all of the toilets had pee in them?

Has anyone read the article about Gov. Easly suggesting the institution of tiered water rates. I'd like to know how those tiers are going to be set up. If it is based soley on useage then those of us with large families are going to be punished even if we are reducing our water consumption.

Why shouldn't larger families who consume more pay for their consumption? Was it not your choice to have a larger family? When your larger family consumes more food do you not have to pay for that food? I'll bet you don't complain about the "tier" approach when you pay for health insurance. When I pay for myself, spouse and ONE child it costs me the same as the person with 10 children which I frankly have never understood. Welcome to the reverse of that logic. Family size is a choice and the fact is it cost more to support large families. Conserve as best you can because that's the right thing to do and stop whining about your family size because that was a choice you made and that choice should have been something you could support.

I am taking it seriously and have changed how I do things. I do not think our elected leaders "really" have started being serious about it even yet. The only proof I need of that is I have seen not a single one call for AND actually do something to stop building until the resources ie. water, is in place to support the growth. They want the taxes no matter what. Come on "leaders" do what you were elected to do, make the hard choices, do the right thing.

SEE WHAT GOD DOES AT CHRISTMAS WHEN YOU PRAY FOR RAIN OR ANYTIME YOU PRAY ,HAVE FAITH AND LEARN TO PRAY AHD SAY THANK YOU TO THE LORD ABOVE GOD BLESS EVERYONE

SO PEOPLE DO YOU THINK PRAYING FOR RAIN HELPS AND CONSERVING WATER BOTH TOGETHER WE ALL WILL GET THROUGH THE DROUGHT JUST FINE AND HAVE FAITH THE LORD SEE WHAT WE NEED AND I KNOW HE WILL DELIVER

i think it's disgusting when chains like McDonalds water their lawns despite a drought!! The recently refurbished McDonalds in Creedmore Crossing on the corner of Strickland and Creedmore waters their new lawn constantly. I have seen them do this during the day recently and then it stopped only apparently to be done at night as I went by this morning and the grass was frozen everyway from the water that hit it during the night hours. Disgusting isn't it?

My family is taking the drought seriously and making serious efforts to conserve water. We are using paper plates/ utensils when we eat at home to prevent from running the dishwasher too often, and we are filling the dishwasher and washing machines as full as we can when we do run them. We also are only flushing the toilet when absolutely necessary. We are considering getting a rain barrel as well, as we do usually have a vegetable garden each year. I think everyone can make some changes to do their part!

I quit cleaning my fish tanks every week. ;) They're looking pretty bad, though. Some water changes are very much needed.

Having read about Meeker's suggestions to cut back on water consumption, I offer up the following. It takes a lot more guts to say our community has reached it's growth threshold than to say "don't flush until necessary". Raleigh has grown beyond what our public resources can sustain or our infrastucture. Schools, roads, Harris Teeters are all too crowded.

Meeker and the City Council should shift their attention from how many times we flush our toilets to limiting how many new toilets there are to flush. I wonder, for example, how many millions of gallons of water the new Soleil Center will suck up in a day? Oh, but the tax revenue will be huge!!! Come on, try making someone who owns a million-dollar condo to flush only when necessary...please.

I know that living in Cary is not popular with a lot of people, but we seem to have the only city leaders who have been serious about the drought. We have been on tiered pricing and water restrictions since the the 2001 drought and it has paid off for us during this drought. Although we have tougher restrictions right now, they are easy to live with and we are not looking at dried up lakes for water supplies. Mayor Meeker and Mayor Bell decided to wait unitl the lakes were mud holes to take any actions. Now Meeker is trying to act like the great drought savior. Or is he just kissing up to Governor Sleazy.

Raleigh does not have water woes because its citizens take long showers or have leaky toliets. Raleigh doesn't have enough water because of this historic drought and because it's leader's do not have the wisdom to place a moratorium on adding new homes and businesses to an overtaxed system. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind helping any way I can. But I do mind smelling like I just took taking a 2 minute shower or paying more for water, just so the Mayor and his developer lobbyist can continue to use what little resources are left. After all Raleigh is annexing parts of the County and expecting those residents to abandon their self-sufficient wells and connect to the water system. If all should sacrifice then All should sacrifice. Let's see what meaningful sacrafice Raleigh City Council is ready to give up?

The water shortage is because of unregulated growth and ignorant city and county planners (MAYOR MEEKER)! I cant beleive Mayor Meeker tried to say the water shortage did not have anything to do with growth. What a moron. I really like his idea about raising water prices also(NOT)! It seems that money is more important than having drinking water. He keeps letting more and more houses to be built in our area for more tax revenue. I think it is about time to hault growth in wake county. What happens if we dont get any substantial rain in 2008? Has Mayor Meeker and his bunch of clowns considered this? Lots of people will continue to lose their jobs.(Powerwashers, Landscapers, Carwash companies, Nurseries, Swiming Pool companies, and more) I own a powerwashing company and we have had to lay off everyone! My employees and I would like to thank you Mayor Meeker for helping create this water crisis! You and you staff rock! NOT!

We've been half-hearted around our home about water conservation. I mean, we're respecting the request to conserve, but nothing too radical. Our home has a water pressure limiter, so it's set at a fairly low water pressure to begin with. As far as flushing goes, if it's yellow we let it mellow. We're trying not to use the dishwasher too much, but we do have 4 people living in our home. So, that is cause for lots of dishes, laundry, and showers. My wife and I are showering together in the mornings. So, I guess it helps. We've always ran the waching maching only when it's a full load. Other than that, we use water like normal. I guess if they do jack up water prices up %50, we'll start using paper plates and plastic forks. I hope we have big enough landfills.

I know this blog is not the place for this but please pass this to someone who can take a look at it for it’s other values.

Mayor Meeker’s plan will penalize people with young children who through being young are messy and have to be changed several times a day. People who wash diapers will also be penalized or go “un-green.” People who work from their homes instead of a traditional office will also be penalized as water that would be used at the office is now used at home.

Has anyone looked at what the Mayor stated about the surcharges? One of his MAIN reasons to put out surcharges is to keep the income at a steady rate for the water department. Is it that he needs that money for his budget and that is more important than anything else? If we’re using less water, then there should be less chemicals being used and less manpower requirements meaning he can lay people off just like every other business in Raleigh.

Regards, Brad

Our 90 day cycle of rainfall is now above average. The rains will come, they always do.

I wish they would call this 'drought' what it really is: A consequence of bad planning and overgrowth. This area is at it's population limit and can't grow any more. There is no more water we can steal from the local watershed without diverting it from somewhere else.

50 or 100 years ago cities could grow, because massive changes to the land could be made. Huge dams could be built to import water supplies, along with massive power generation plants. But those days are over in the US. The environmental impact of such massive changes on the ecology of the land wasn't fully understood when the great dams of our country were first built. So what we have is what we have.

And no, I'm not conserving. I've done my part over my lifetime by never watering my lawn, ever. I figure I'm in the bottom 5th percentile of water users, so I'm just staying put.

Not taking this serioulsy and its quite comical to see how some of you actually think you are making a difference. There is enough water and more will come. It literally falls from the sky you silly do gooders. You probably all think Al Gore is brilliant too!

If the well is private it is up to that owner what they do with the water it supplies. I actually do not care what anyone does about the water. Whether they conserve or not is up to each person. I do conserve because it is the smart choice to make.

Drought? What drought?

WELL I THINK THEY WERE WRONG ABOUT THERES GOING TO BE A DRY WINTER,ONLY THE LORD KNOWS THAT

There is discussion by the Raleigh city council on imposing Stage 2 water restrictions soon. This means no watering outdoors, period. I wonder if the question should be raised as to whether we, as property owners, have a legal right to water based on the property rights that the constitution grants us. Does the city council have the legal right to infringe upon my property rights by imposing a complete water use restriction?

Wow-I'm surprised at how ignorant some of you are. I was ready to give people the benefit of the doubt, then I read these comments. Your ignorance amazes me. "Not taking this serioulsy and its quite comical to see how some of you actually think you are making a difference."

Don't the pictures of the near-empty lake disturb you at ALL? I'm by no-means a "do-gooder". BUT SERIOUSLY... Is it really that hard to turn the water off when you brush your teeth or shave?? Do you have any concept of how many people are in Raleigh, and how many daily gallons would be saved just by doing this?

Idiots, seriously. Get over yourselves.

What's Falls Lake? I thought the water I shower and shave with, the water I flush my toilet with, the water I drink, the water I wash my car with, came from the Colorado river.

I only shower once a week; I brush my teeth and shave with water from the toilet bowl (before going); I've installed a system whereby Heineken comes out of the kitchen taps so I don't drink water...I think I am doing my part...so 'mittmitt', get off your soap box.

I sent an e-mail to the governors office suggesting that while the lake level is so low that although it may be exspensive, it might be worth having earth removed from the dry lake beds now so that when we do get normal rain fall again that there will be that much more water supply for a future drought. Would like to hear other ideas about the drought.

with 200-300 new homes been built in morrisville and that many more just in the poole rd area, I wonder if the our leaders are taking things seriously since everyone of those homes will need water

The city is talking about stage 2 water restrictions. If they stop outdoor watering, powerwashing and so on what about big business that uses more water than us small business owners. I own a powerwashing business and if I can work per the city the large concrete companies in the area should shut down also. I use around 600 gallons per day to work. How much water does just 1 concrete truck use during 1 days use? Multiply that times ALOT of trucks. Oh! but that would halt construction and we cant have that. Mayor Meeker needs that construction for more and more tax revenue. MAYOR MEEKER SAY SCREW THE LITTLE GUYS!
