are you taking the drought seriously? wral’s david crabtree wants to know
Published Oct 15, 2007Views: 2414
Gov. Mike Easley has called for further cutbacks in water consumption by every North Carolina resident to conserve limited water supplies that, he said, will likely continue to shrink in the coming months. He stopped short of declaring an emergency but said that could happen if people don’t begin to be serious about water conservation.
We want to hear from you. Have you cut back water usage? If so, how? If not, why?
Would you seriously consider shorter showers? Have you thought of buying a rain barrel? Shaving with a minimum of water? Brushing your teeth with a minimum of water?
Should well water, from the water table, be banned from irrigating lawns? How concerned are you that water could be rationed by spring?
David used many of your comments in a story he produced over the weekend. Thank you for your feedback.

Yes I'm taking the drought seriously. Yes I've cut everything that I can think of that wastes water, and cut usage. But, until well residents and business are restricted in usage, no one is going to be convinced that it's a real threat.

The faucet is turned off while tooth brushing, face washing, dishwashing, etc. and turned back on only for rinsing.
Dishwasher and clothes washer are run at full capacity only.
All of these steps are easy to do and remember if you stop and consider water to be a valuable and limited necessity, like gold coming out of the faucet.

In the restroom, he had posted a sign to keep that in mind for all of the patrons. I've never forgotten this little rhyme.
If it's yellow, let it mellow. When it's brown, flush it down. Help us save water.
I think that Governor Easley's comment about strategic toilet flushing hits this point in a little more socially acceptable fashion.
Peace

Before anyone builds another neighborhood, they should be forced to look at two factors to determine if they are able: 1) Is there enough water? 2) Are there enough schools?

According to a Virginia Tech Study (2000), up to 25 gallons of water can be used rinsing dishes in the sink before putting them in the dishwasher. We scrape well and let the machine do its work. The Pre-rinse or Rinse-only cycle uses only 1-2 gallons.
We don't let what our neighbors are doing affect our water conservation efforts. We just do the best we can here at our house. If we decided not to conserve until our neighbors stopped wasting, then there'd be TWO households wasting water.

I think that the 20% ~ 25% of houses they are talking about are only the ones that are for sale and not being sold compared to the time-frame from (I imagine) this time last year. This includes existing homes and new construction. There has been tremendous growth in new construction for the past several years. Many of the pre-existing homes are vacant now due to people moving into newly constructed houses. Therefore, the number of households in this area has certainly grown over the recent years. Wake County's population has yet to cease in growth, thus straining our water supplies over the long term.

Sure, bringing in more industry is great; building new homes is terrific; growing the population is, in many ways, positive. However,if our roads and schools cannot support the growth; if the water supply is not EFFECTIVELY managed to allow us reasonable use at ALL times, then our government officials have failed as stewards of the public good.
This failure should be recognized at the voting booth. This, of course, is the civil way to address such failure. If it were up to me, and I believe others as well, there would be public hangings.

Our government officials helped get us into this mess!!!!! They expected tropical storms to solve our water problems.
Kiss my backside on citing people for watering.

Demand everyone use less bathing water...even if you have to go a knocking on the bathroom door to remind them to cut it off.
Don't flush the comode every time if only going number one. But if it's brown - flush it down.
Use all water for something...cold for coffee pot as you wait it to get hot coming out.
Very short showers I do take.
And get on your knees and pray for rain.

If any praying is done, it should be done to allow us to be governed by officials who understand how to manage growth and not simply spew reactive water restriction rhetoric.
