are you taking the drought seriously? wral’s david crabtree wants to know

Gov. Mike Easley has called for further cutbacks in water consumption by every North Carolina resident to conserve limited water supplies that, he said, will likely continue to shrink in the coming months. He stopped short of declaring an emergency but said that could happen if people don’t begin to be serious about water conservation.

We want to hear from you. Have you cut back water usage? If so, how? If not, why?

Would you seriously consider shorter showers? Have you thought of buying a rain barrel? Shaving with a minimum of water? Brushing your teeth with a minimum of water?

Should well water, from the water table, be banned from irrigating lawns? How concerned are you that water could be rationed by spring?

David used many of your comments in a story he produced over the weekend.  Thank you for your feedback.

This is not a generation of people who believe in conservation. The adults in this generation are the "me" generation, myself included. God help us!

Yes I'm taking the drought seriously. Yes I've cut everything that I can think of that wastes water, and cut usage. But, until well residents and business are restricted in usage, no one is going to be convinced that it's a real threat.

A lot of you sound like idiots! It's your own fault and you should have seen it coming 10 years ago! That's why I got out when the development was getting out of control. Traffic jams, too many strip malls, and now no water! That's what you get when there's a crazy influx of people moving into the area. Good luck dealing with it, 10 years ago you were loving it and now you're wishing they'd never had moved in. Don't act so surprised while you're reading this, you knew it was coming and you should have been conserving all along! Now you know. Peace!

Water conservation is a serious issue I take to heart. I have taken many steps personally to conserve as I am on well water and do not wish to go thirsty. I own a lawncare business and in trying to do the right thing, for my clients and the community at large, I waited to seed my lawns until cooler temps. prevailed. This decision may cost me more than just profit. At least I do not have employees I'd have to let go, others are not so lucky. Our city leaders waited too long to act and it has cost us. Watering should have been curtailed back in July. Conserve as you can, but also do not comdemn those who properly care for their grass as it protects our water from pollutants, sedementation, and erosion of topsoil. Just my opinion.

We have cut back some on our water usage this year. But whenever I start thinking of cutting back more, I drive by business and/or gov't buildings only to see their automatic sprinklers going like crazy----even tho it's pouring down rain at the time! And it hasn't stopped either. I saw this just this past week in Cumberland and Robeson Counties. We are told that we cannot wash our cars at home anymore. Many of us have nozzles on our hoses that stop the flow of water when we aren't actually using it. By using this type of nozzle we use LESS water to wash our cars than the commercial car washes use. But yet we are told we have to go to the car wash. Ridiculous! One way the fire departments can conserve, and at the same time HELP the local farmers, is when they have to open the hydrants. Instead of letting it run down the street, rig up something with the farmers to collect it for irrigation or whatever. Or collect the water for some other use----just don't waste it down the drain!!!!

yes I Have Been conserving water And praying to the lord above that he will send the Rain we need ,we all need to pray ,I wash clothes once a week ,I make sure the disherwasher is full before running ,I tell you I am wondering if we are going to have to get animals put down because theres no water to give them ,I pray not, so thats what I to say

P.S WE ALL NEED TO PRAY FOR RAIN

My husband and I rinse our dishes after dinner and stack them in the dishwasher but don't wash them until there's a full load. We only briefly watered our 2 tomato plants every 2-3 days ALL SUMMER as we knew levels were getting too low. We take shorter showers and are even talking about putting the plug in the tub while we shower to save the water, and we'll use a bucket to scoop the water out and use that to flush the toilet. We bought front loading washer and dryer last fall, and that washer uses much less water than a regular washer does...but we still only wash full loads.

I am most definitely taking the drought seriously. We do a lot to conserve, many things that others have mentioned. However, I wish to comment about WRAL's signs posted outside their building, in which they claim that their grass is so green because they use well water. Using a well does NOT excuse one from conserving, and it is irresponsible to assume that just because you are using a well, you are immune to the drought. The water table is replenished by rain - water does not spontaneously generate - it is a limited resource either way. Some people depend on underground water for their livelihood, and using it with reckless abandon is irresponsible, selfish, and ignorant. I take the drought seriously, but I am not sure that WRAL does.

Our well went dry several years ago and we had to dig a deeper well. I learned at that point how precious water is. I have NEVER watered my lawn. That has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. All that water you wasted watering your lawn with and now you will wish you had it just to take a shower. What a waste. We should ALWAYS conserve water. We need to start living right and praying for rain!!

I take the drought and conservation seriously. However, the drought is not the issue. The real issue is the local politicians who have continued approving record growth without planning for the resources to support it. I have lived in Wake county for the last 22 years. Falls Lake, the drinking water source has remained the same size in those 22 years. The county population has skyrocketed in that time. Now, those same politicians want to tell us to be more responsible by using less water or we will be fined. Where is there accountability? Unchecked growth has caused this problem and it will continue until the growth is stopped. Higher taxes for more schools, higher fees for less water, toll roads for congested hiways...anyone see a trend here?

Wolfen

In my house we have taken the drought very seriously. Water is the one thing we can't do without. So we have cut back on the length of the showers we take, fewer loads of wash, not let the water run when washing dishes etc. And we have not watered our lawn all summer long. Here's a message to everyone. Stop watering your lawns!

Everyday, I cross over the north end of what used to be Falls Lake, up the Creedmoor area. It breaks my heart to see nothing but dry land and a small 'creek' desperately trying to hang in there. Having our own well, I began telling EVERYONE in my house to cut down on the shower time, shut it off when brushing their teeth have even threatened to cut the valve off if water is left on too long..using paper everything to save on running the dishwasher and washing the dishes in the sink like we did when I was growing up.. I've been with no water...it isnt fun. As for watering the lawn..somebody please tell these jokers in Wake Forest to knock it off!!!.. we dont care if they have a nice house with green grass. it will grow back next year!!!!!

The drought is being taken seriously here at home. We use large storage bins to collect shower water as the shower runs to come to warm temperature. Then, while water is warmed up, family members take quick showers one after another so no additional warm-up time is needed. Collected shower water is used in the washing machine and as flush water for strategic flushing only. Similarly we are collecting sink tap water as it runs to come to hot dishwashing temperate and it is used for drinking water, coffeepot water, and cooking water.

The faucet is turned off while tooth brushing, face washing, dishwashing, etc. and turned back on only for rinsing.

Dishwasher and clothes washer are run at full capacity only.

All of these steps are easy to do and remember if you stop and consider water to be a valuable and limited necessity, like gold coming out of the faucet.

This is a little indelicate, but I thought it may be pertinent. When vacationing many years ago on the Big Island of Hawaii, we were noting that all of the homes/businesses had extremely large rainwater cache basins. At a gift shop near the southernmost part of the island, the proprietor said that water lines couldn't be laid due to everything being built on lava flow. So, that was the only way to get water for daily use. And, conservation was always foremost in their minds.

In the restroom, he had posted a sign to keep that in mind for all of the patrons. I've never forgotten this little rhyme.

If it's yellow, let it mellow. When it's brown, flush it down. Help us save water.

I think that Governor Easley's comment about strategic toilet flushing hits this point in a little more socially acceptable fashion.

Peace

Wolfen666, you are exactly right! All of this growth in the Triangle area is continuing. Apex's Mayor wants to double the size of the town in the next 10 years. Where are they going to get the water if there isn't even enough, now, to handle who is here?

Before anyone builds another neighborhood, they should be forced to look at two factors to determine if they are able: 1) Is there enough water? 2) Are there enough schools?

It is hard to agree to a 3 minute shower when my neighbor is still watering their lawn. Permit or not, grass should be let go before I am asked to wear dirty clothes. Get tough on the non essentials!

Among the many water saving ideas I've heard is one to save water while taking a shower by cutting off the shower after getting wet and lathering up a wash cloth, then washing all over before turning the water back on. I offer one caution before anyone tries this. Be sure you have a very effective non-slip floor in your shower or tub. Without running water, soap lather will build up under your feet and increase the risk of slipping and falling.

Does anyone know how the water levels are at Harris Lake?? Is there any danger of loss of cooling water for the Nuclear Plant??

I lived through 7 years of drought in California 20 years ago... It's time for people to WAKE UP... what's more important? Green grass or drinking water? In some areas here, there is only 100 days of water left (at current usage levels). What happens if this goes on for another year, or more?

Cities need to pass out these rain barrels to everyone on city water, charge a small monthly fee, and force people to 'reclaim' that fee through savings on their water bills by using the barrel's water for their plants.

Yes, we are taking the water shortage seriously. We've installed a rain barrel, showers are short, water is never left running for tooth brushing, face washing, etc. Any water left in pans or glasses is poured onto plants.

According to a Virginia Tech Study (2000), up to 25 gallons of water can be used rinsing dishes in the sink before putting them in the dishwasher. We scrape well and let the machine do its work. The Pre-rinse or Rinse-only cycle uses only 1-2 gallons.

We don't let what our neighbors are doing affect our water conservation efforts. We just do the best we can here at our house. If we decided not to conserve until our neighbors stopped wasting, then there'd be TWO households wasting water.

i live in franklin county on a farm ... we have to give horses and other animals water .. tonight i turned on my water and there was nothing hoping in the mornin there will be

Last Sunday's N&O stated there real estate is down 20-25% in the area, can't remember specifics, but if 20-25% of houses are standing empty, then there may be some automatic water savings, the unemployment rate must be fairly high, state revenue from taxes must be down, given offshoring, and the governor is trying to persuade businesses to locate here to provide jobs. Yes, I started water conservation efforts a year ago, so I am aware of water waste. Rarely if ever does my family wash a vehicle. I catch rainwater, because you always need to re-distribute rainwater, the only renewable water source we have. I remember touring a biotech company four or five years ago, and during the tour the guide stated "we have first dibs on water," so evidently water was part of the deal for the biotech company locating here.

This historic drought can be compared to the severe wildfires out in California. It's going to take Mother Nature quite some time for it to "grow back" to normal.

To Kevten:

I think that the 20% ~ 25% of houses they are talking about are only the ones that are for sale and not being sold compared to the time-frame from (I imagine) this time last year. This includes existing homes and new construction. There has been tremendous growth in new construction for the past several years. Many of the pre-existing homes are vacant now due to people moving into newly constructed houses. Therefore, the number of households in this area has certainly grown over the recent years. Wake County's population has yet to cease in growth, thus straining our water supplies over the long term.

i havent taken a shower for 3 weeks !

I feel I was already conserving pretty well but have tried to cut back further. I was already washing only absolutely full loads of laundry, not washing the car, watering my indoor plants with leftover water from dish washing, taking short showers, not watering outdoors. Still thinking about any other places I can cut back.

I think citizens took it more seriously than the officials. The government did too little too late

Yes I have been conserving water daily but everyone is talking about the city of Raleigh, remember water runs down hill and we in Goldsboro get all our water from the Neuse and that comes from the city. I just wish everyone was conserving but they are not. I hope the law officials get harder on everyone. Somebody said earlier that the officials did to little to late. It is never too late, every drop counts. If you have a well they should also conserve water, some think they paid for the well that they can use all they want. Well I have a well and plan on useing it when we are out.

MY FAMILY AND I ARE TAKING THIS DROUGHT ON A VERY SERIOUS LEVEL. MY FAMILY AND I HAVE CUT BACK ON EVERYTHING TO CONSERVE WATER...AS WELL AS MY INLAWS THEY DO NOT WATER THEIR LAWN, WASH CARS....WE ARE DOING ALL WE CAN TO HELP CONSERVE.

NO! We've conserved enough!

I am so sick and tired of hearing about this water crisis. Outside of the obvious lack of rain as a reason, this crisis is completely the fault of our government officials (from the Governor on down the line). Their lack of vision in balancing growth with the ability to provide basic public resource is staggering and disgusting. It is about time that they take their heads out of the sand and face the realities of uncontrolled growth.

Sure, bringing in more industry is great; building new homes is terrific; growing the population is, in many ways, positive. However,if our roads and schools cannot support the growth; if the water supply is not EFFECTIVELY managed to allow us reasonable use at ALL times, then our government officials have failed as stewards of the public good.

This failure should be recognized at the voting booth. This, of course, is the civil way to address such failure. If it were up to me, and I believe others as well, there would be public hangings.

So the governor wakes up from his 7 year sleep and notices there is a drought going on. Calls for 50 percent reduction. Now if he had woken up several months ago and called for 50 percent that could have easily been accomplished. But those of us that have already been conserving at the beginning of this drought can not help with further reduction is usage. Actually I think an additional 24 percent reduction is pretty good.

No, not now. We've cut back enough and we're tired of it!

My family takes this seriously. I hope the govt will impose permanent water restrictions on lawn watering. It's like oil, unless someone makes us, a lot of folks don't have either the intelligence or self dicipline to recognize and act on a problem.

It is hard to take this seriously when our water system (Town of Cary) has over 90% of the water supply available (something like 295 days), yet in symapthy, we can't water our lawns because other municipalities did not plan as well.

REAL SMART OhYea... Stop watering lawns and watch your yard turn into a weed pile and have erosion problems!

I am way tired of hearing about "the drought" what a waste of news time... We have more people using the same limited water sources. What we need is another source. That's the problem with our elected leaders. They can find money for parks, roads, schools...It seems that water may be a little bit more important.important.

People Forget your Lawn ,who care about Lawns ,There's more important things to do with the water ,like drinking it and other important things THINK ABOUT PEOPLE

I trust that Gov Easley will be remembered here for not acting fast enough, if this goes sour. He gambles with election votes by not forcing businesses to slow down water usage. Ridiculous that we can still wash cars (limited to weekends - gotta laugh at that), and water grass. To my mind, if we can still water grass, there obviously isn't a shortage. I have put in rain barrels and sprinkle mostly from them with a pump, and try to cut back, but until the clamp comes down on business it is hopeless. Gov gambols his re-election with our water. Strong work.

I washed my car this weekend with a bucket of water from a rain barrel I installed. I dare someone to cite me for it. They would be chased off my property with a 12-guage. How dare ANY government official spout water-restriction talk to me.

Our government officials helped get us into this mess!!!!! They expected tropical storms to solve our water problems.

Kiss my backside on citing people for watering.

As long as we're on the subject of businesses NOT conserving water. I'd like to know where Mr. Goodnight (SAS) and owner of Prestonwood Country Club got his special dispensation to fill up (and keep them filled up) all of the ponds on the golf course and keep the course watered as well. And who was the nitwit who allowed the new Triangle Aquatic Center to use 1.2 million gallons of water to fill up their swimming pools? As we head into WINTER? Who are these privileged few that don't seem to have to conserve water and can use it like there is no tomorrow...and there may not be any water tomorrow!!! Oh that's right...friends and contributors of the politicians that have allowed this uncontrolled growth around here that caused this water problem in the first place. Developers need to provide the infrastructure (schools, roads, water etc.) and pay for it before the first shovel of dirt is turned over in a new development.

People we all need to pray for rain, the good lord will help us through this but we need to pray, I prayed for the rain last week or so ago he answer that prayer

not any longer. We've conserved enough! Do something about it Raleigh.

Dry lawns mean more free time on the weekend.

Demand everyone use less bathing water...even if you have to go a knocking on the bathroom door to remind them to cut it off.

Don't flush the comode every time if only going number one. But if it's brown - flush it down.

Use all water for something...cold for coffee pot as you wait it to get hot coming out.

Very short showers I do take.

And get on your knees and pray for rain.

I couldn't argee more...we need to pray. We need to pray for getting government officials to understand that unlimited growth will continue to cause a strain on our roads, schools, and water sources.

Pray for government officials who know how to govern and are not simply, and stupidly, just politicians.

yes i take the water problem seriously i stoped running water while brushing my teeth,i dont wash dishes until i have more then 10 plates since its only 1 in the family i wait until i have a large load of clothes to wash instead of wash a couple of things i see my bills is down, i wash dishes by hand i dont rinse them until the sink is full after washing them.

Everyone We all need to pray for rain if we want to get out of this drought ,Please get on your knees and pray to the good lord above. Thanks

If the good Lord above can get us out of this drought, then why did the good Lord above allow it in the first place?

If any praying is done, it should be done to allow us to be governed by officials who understand how to manage growth and not simply spew reactive water restriction rhetoric.

The Lord will provide but will do so in His Time, not ours.

The good lord will provide ,But not everyone prays and they need to pray ,I think this happen for a reason,But he will take care of us ,And he send the rain we need,we just to learn to have faith Thank
