are you taking the drought seriously? wral’s david crabtree wants to know

Gov. Mike Easley has called for further cutbacks in water consumption by every North Carolina resident to conserve limited water supplies that, he said, will likely continue to shrink in the coming months. He stopped short of declaring an emergency but said that could happen if people don’t begin to be serious about water conservation.

We want to hear from you. Have you cut back water usage? If so, how? If not, why?

Would you seriously consider shorter showers? Have you thought of buying a rain barrel? Shaving with a minimum of water? Brushing your teeth with a minimum of water?

Should well water, from the water table, be banned from irrigating lawns? How concerned are you that water could be rationed by spring?

David used many of your comments in a story he produced over the weekend.  Thank you for your feedback.

Haven't changed a thing and don't intend to. Never watered my lawn or washed my cars anyway; just brought them to Bunkey's -- the cars, not the lawn. I would just as soon turn my entire yard into a tarmac if they would let me.

We have enough water to easily last until the end of January, and even that is a moving target, extending out farther and farther everytime we get even a bit of rain. But that is apparently only what is called the clean water. They can extract far more from the lake; they just have to work for it. No matter, it will not come to that -- not even close.

Definately taking it seriously. Have a pond it is fed by a spring...it's low but not as low as it was last year. We are on a well......don't know how deep it is but I'm very careful about how much water we do use. Wash only full loads, clothes and dishwasher. Take short showers, turn off water when lathering and shampooing, then rinse. Our area doesn't seem as dry as some we are about a mile from Kerr Lake. All of the plants(and there are many!)are showing signs of stress. Even the weeds are droopy! Just hope we get rain soon.

I'm on a well and I've always conserved water. Restrictions don't matter, just common sense.

very serious!! i planted alot of plants in the spring and new trees and shrubs in the fall of last year. i've watered twice this summer. some plants have made it and some haven't. i can always plant more if it rains in the spring. i think outside watering for landscape purposes should have be totally banned ALONG time ago. i for one don't want to run out of water for drinking, bath, and laundry. as for the ones that just kept on watering-i resent you being so selfish as to not think of this as a community effort. as for the government, they continue to talk about the drought, but i don't see as to them doing much to help.

Yes, I have cut back. I don't water my lawn or wash my car. I won't plant anything in the yard because I would have to water it.

To save water, I do not throw away ice, pasta/rice water or any water that I cook with. I put it in a large plastic jug and it is what I use to water outside plants and I only water those plants after sundown. We also take "navy" showers. Kudos to all of us who are taking this seriously!

I only take one shower a week. Using baby wipes or bath wipes the rest of the time keeps me fresh and clean. I also use paper plates and products which keep dish washing to a minimum. Ann

We have been taking it seriously all summer. We take showers not baths and save the shower water to water the plants.(This will not hurt the plants) We have started taking the shower water and pouring it into the toilet to flush it. The shower water will force the water in the bowl to go down.

We have changed the way we take showers. We water down entirely and then shut off the water. Next, we soap up and wash hair and then turn the water back on to rinse. It is amazing how much faster we are out of the shower and how much our water usage is decreasing. We are not doing any outside watering.

Ways I help to conserve our water: 1.I wash only 1 dishwasher load per week. 2.Use paper products such as plates, cups, plastic utensils to help cut down on wash loads 3.I catch the rinse water from my portable dishwasher to use in flushing the commode. 4.I put a little pine-sol or clorox in the toilet bowl to eliminate odors and flush toilet only when absolutely nessacary. 5.I use only full loads when doing laundry and limit loads to 2 per week. 6.I wash car only 2 x's per month if nessacary and use windex to keep windows clean in between car washes. 7. I shower by first wetting down then turn water off, soap up and then turn water on to rinse. 8.I wash my hair in the kitchen sink so I have better control over the amount of water used. I get really perturbed when I see others using water to wash down sidewalks, pressure wash their homes, water grass and/or flowers with no consideration for the severe draught we're in. What is the matter with people must they be so selfish

I found the a/c runoff and connected it to a 30 gal. all weather container which fills quickly in the hot weather, doesn't leave any dampness in places I dont want it and I use that water for the plants. We have rainbarrels for gutter runoff as well to help keep potable water use to a minimum for outside use.If there's extra in the container,I fill the watering cans for the next day I use it for the trees and shrubs on the edge of the lawn, they suffer in a drought as well. LLong Youngsville

Yes, I live next to Falls Lake have have been alarmed by the drought for some time now. I use a well and have not had any problems so far, but don't want to either. I have not done any outside watering all summer and I have not washed my car in the past three months. I no longer use my dishwasher but rather use fewer dishes and wash them with a dampened sponge with soap then I fill a bowl with water to rinse off the dishes. I have a dog and use a bucket for his drinking water. Each day when I give him fresh water, I use the old water to water one or more of my plant containers. All my plants are well mulched, so hopefully I will not lose too many of them.

we have not watered our lawn since september. We take a 3 minute shower or less.I have not used my dish washer since September. They use a lot of water.I wash my clothes once a week.I wash my dishes just before I go to bed.

I only water my raised-bed vegetable garden. Because of the good drainage it dosen't need much. The hosta and annuals aren't looking very pretty but maybe next year. I really have always tried to be conservative with water.

We live in Sanford and we are experiencing no water problems. The local officials seem to only be doing what they have to to comply with the state issued mandates. People water lawns any day, any time. You can wash your car, pressure wash driveways and generally use all the water you can afford. This is most irresponsible on our city officials part.

During the A/C months we recyle condensation water into buckets plus we follow a flushing practise we learned from a New Mexico resident where water is always at a premium, "if its yellow let it mellow, if its brown flush it down".

Fewer flushes really saves a lot of water For those who haven't heard the ditty yet:

If it's yellow Let it mellow If its brown Flush it down

Maybe its over the edge language wise, but it works

My wife and I put a bucket in the shower to catch the water while it heats up. We then use that to flush. We do turn the water off while brushing and shower as quickly as we can. And, we shower together. What a great idea...saves a lot of water and adds some fun too.

I take it very seriously, but I drive by PCC every day and they are watering all of the time..........that's water that doesn't make it down river for people to drink........it is always the same story, the poor middle class always makes the sacrifices....WRAL how about getting agressive with some of these Golf courses.

My family has never wasted water, every year our lawn turns brown as we feel excessive irrigation is not a good use of this limited resource. Unfortunately, I don't think that we can conserve our way out of this mess. Many have posted interesting ideas. The fact is this: we have had a rain deficit for only 6 months. We are in this mess because of years of poorly managed growth without increasing the available water supply before approving more growth. Every elected official should be ashamed. I'd be more sympathetic if these drought conditions had been around for years. Don't blame the weather, blame those who allowed our paradise to be paved. It is just shameful. What kind of quality of life is there when a simple pleasure like occasionally washing the car in ones own driveway will probably soon be taken away. Sure come to Raleigh, its a great place to live, just bring your own water.

Brrigsbee - good stuff! To tell people they need to cut back a gallon per person per day is great, but tell them how! So many have already stopped washing cars and watering lawns and done what they could personally, but creative suggestions need to be spread to the community. I think WRAL is asking for ideas which is good. Hopefully they will feed it back out to us:-)

Catch water while shower gets hot and use it on plants or leave it outside for animals & birds. Take showers in succession so that water stays hot (or take cold shower - you will get done faster)Limit time to 2-3 minutes. Never throw away "good" water, ie: if you have a half glass of water left from drinking put it in the dogs dish or on a plant not down the drain. same for bottled water. Teach your children and grandchildren to conserve. Only brew the amount of coffee/tea you are going to drink. Don't dump a half a pot.

We recently returned from Germany and noticed that they have toilets without tanks and dual flush modes. Light or heavy flush volume. We were also told that many have cisterns and the rainwater they collect is adequate to flush their toilets.

Keep some liter bottles by your sink. When you run water for temperature change, catch the water in the liter bottles for your houseplants or outdoor shrubs. Every little bit helps. Goal is: no water down the drain!

We will be using more plastic cups and plates to cut down on dishwashing. We limit our washing of clothes. We take quick showers and turn off the water while shaving and brushing. I work at the Angus Barn and we are not serving water automatically to customers.

I have taken the hot weather in Raleigh seriously all of my life because this is my home. Grass has ALWAYS turned brown; it has ALWAYS returned to green in the fall. It might require one to aerate and distribute some grass seed, but then we have no shortage of aerators and grass seed. Watering lawns is a ridiculous use of water. It should have been stopped months ago. When the appearance of lawns is more important than washing clothes, bathing, washing dishes and having water for fires, we have truly lost our way. There are people in my subdivision who continue to water lawns daily and Aqua of NC has asked people to voluntarily stop months ago. How incredibly selfish these particular transplants are. There are subdivisions on Raven Ridge Road who's homeowners association are still watering entrances. I am counting on these self-indulgent "people" to supply the rest of us with water when our community water runs dry.

I live in Person County where there are NO restrictions at all. Not even a suggestion of voluntary conservation. The county library's sprinkler waters much more street than grass and there was even a car wash fundraiser a few weeks ago in a parking lot. Most people I have talked to are unconcerned with the drought and are apathetic to the rest of the Triangle and state's problems. Selfish !! We are fiddling while Rome is burning ! We will be paying dearly for this soon, I'm sure.

People shoud have been compelled to cease watering lawns MONTHS ago! Fines should have been $10 grand of more. What happened to common sense? I have a well that is 175 ft deep, but we are still conserving water. It has never been this dry, for this long, in my lifetime. Anyone (personal or business} who is watering grass (yes, that includes golf courses,) should have to serve jail time and it should be a felony, and the sentence should be for at least one year! Stop using water, except for necessities: drinking, a little for bathing, (the Army taught us in boot camp how to bathe, shave, etc. from one steel helmet full of water per day.) STOP all grass watering!!!! Is that so hard to understand?????

Put a brick inside your toilet tank. It won't take as much water to fill it back up.

I have lived in Raleigh for 17 years and have left temporarily (24 months) for my husband's job. I have been monitoring the water situation very closely and it's dire. Yet, you still see people with green, plush lawns that look like a freshly carpeted room. For some reason, these people think it's OK to water since they water at night. No matter when you water, it's a waste of water. The state of NC (not just municipalities) should outright ban outside watering and set a limit on the amount of water that each household can use before it's too late. Then people can choose to either water their beautiful grass or take a shower or worse, get a drink. This is an extremely serious situation and people should be forced to understand it because it could eventually harmfully affect everyone. As far as I am concerned, the state of NC is not doing enough to make people realize that they could possibly not have enough water to drink in the very near future.

Gov. Easley's restrictions don't go far enough. I still watch my neighbors wash their porche and BMW EVERY Saturday!! Although I think that this is not necessary or responsible personally, there is nothing set in place to stop them!

Yes, my family is taking this drought very seriously. I don't know what other people are thinking about. STOP watering your grass. I can't believe that the Easley, Meeker are still letting people water there grass. I forgot they can just move to where there is water. When you live high on the hog then you have no worrys.

I can not understand how people can be so selfish. Everybody seems to think this is a problem for somebody else to take care of. We have low flow shower heads in all of our showers and a low water usage washing machine. We also turn off the shower when soaping up and we do not always flush after every use. How can people think their lawn or a clean car is more important than drinking water? How are my neighbors going to explain to their children why we are out of water? I sincerely hope people wake up and SOON!

Yes, my family is taking this seriously. We have completely stopped watering our gardens and grass; we are taking shorter showers, and am doing more handwasing of dishes instead of the dishwasher, etc.... trying anything....

I always watch our water use because we live on a tight budget. Can't let the water bill get to high. However, how can I take the drought seriously when our state leaders don't seem to be. If we are in such an "emergency" as media reports, why on earth aren't we on tougher water restrictions??? How can Easley talk about how desperate the situation is and then say it is ok to waste water by washing your cars??!! And, I do see people doing that. Why weren't thougher restrictions implemented months ago??

NO TO MY COMMENT ABOUT SPRINKER, EXERCISE AND BATH. WE ALL NEED TO CUT BACK. HELLO WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT WATER FOR FOOD,BATH AND HEALTH OR A PRETTY LAWN.. LET'S ALL DO OUR PART.

the news should make a plea to viewers to do everything possible to conserve water on a specific day, say this friday, and then the city should provide the news dept with the results of how much water in gallons was saved during that day compared to the typical day of water consumption. that way the public can really see how they personally made a difference. hopefully this will start a trend!

Lets see. The City of Raleigh is all upset that we are running out of water. I wonder is they have slowed down on building permit approvals. I wonder if the powers that be have even thought about the uncontrolled growth as being part of our water shortage...Show me at least one building permit denied and I will show you my dead dry lawn. Cary has had full time water restrictions for 5 years and they seem to be doing fine with 3 days of watering and 4 days not.

Our family has been using disposable plates, bowls, etc for 2 months now to reduce the amount of dishes that need washing. I wash dishes once a week now, by hand, we no longer use the dishwasher. We do not wash cars, water lawns, gardens, etc and laundry is done only once a week on Saturday, 2 loads, a light and dark load. My husband and I each use only one towel per week to reduce laundry. We just let it hang out to dry during the day. It really cuts down on the size of the loads I wash on the weekend. We take shorter showers, no letting the water run while brushing our teeth. There may be more measures we could take to help reduce, but right now I can't think of what they might be, but we're trying.

Absolutely, even if I'm not happy about the over-abundance of building permits. It is much more fun to wash the car in the rain. I've washed it twice in the past few months. I've lived in Raleigh for the past 20 years and have never watered my lawn. Just a few plants periodically. Yes, it is green and gets mowed weekly (most of the time)! I drove by Crabtree Valley Mall this morning and they were running sprinklers...after all it is their day! Not very civic minded by my estimation. I hope the city council does their job since some people can't do it on their own. It's not hard to do our part even in a small way. These water use blogs over the past months have been interesting!!!!

I've been watching this drought issue from almost the beginning and have lived in the area for over 40 years. As far as I can remember, I haven't seen a period that has been this hot and dry for so long. However, I still think the uncontrolled growth in the area is the main cause of the current situation. The areas that haven't experienced the same type of growth don't seem to be having as much of a problem as Wake County. The one thing that I have not heard any mention of through this ordeal, is what kind of restrictions have been placed on the companies and major water users during this period. I think before they ban watering completely for the residents, all of the companies should have to implement their emergency water plans, especially the big water users. I think Raleigh waited entirely too long to request these plans from the companies, they should have been on file from the last drought in 2002 and should have been put in place during this last stage of restrictions.

So Meeker has decided to ban outside watering, but doesn't want to ask businesses to have to take a hit yet? The leadership during this whole ordeal has been terrible at best. It's obvious that asking the citazens to conserve is not going to save enough, it's time the companies started doing their part as well. People that rely on water for a living should be able to receive relief from the government, just like the farmers do. This should be considered a natural disaster just like a flood or tornado.

Everyone can and should be serious about conserving water in Raleigh. I don't have a lawn to stop watering, but I'm not washing my car, I'm running water-using appliances only when absolutely necessary, taking shorter showers, reusing cooking water to water houseplants and checking all of my pipes for slow leaks. Water restrictions can get tougher and tougher, but ultimately Raleigh's citizens have to commit to conserving or we'll be in real trouble before too long!

I drive past Falls Lake every day--or what is left of it. The sight is powerful encouragement to cut back water use to the bare minimum needed for daily hygiene and health. We can drink bottled water, even save shower water and use is to flush toilets. My concern is one that I have not heard much about--fire safety. Is there a point that water supplies for firefighters will be significantly impaired? And while I don't want people to loose jobs, we seem to be reaching a point where businesses need to curtail their water use further as well.

Almost everyday I see water trailing across Plantation Drive in the Wakefield Development. It seems that a great deal of water is being wasted as no one is attending to this situation. Do they possibly have a "commercial permit" to use water for the island greenery? This seems like such a waste!

My wife and i live in the country near lake gaston and we have our own well.We began taking short showers when we realized the drought was going to get serious back in the summer. We stopped watering all out door frowers and shurbs. We use a pan in the sink when we wash our hands and the dishes the same way,and take the water from the pan that would be wasted and use it sparringly to keep the plants and flowers watered to the minimum. So far it seems to be working.I still have water, even though i don't know how much. But common sense will tell you when the water table is low as it is and you keep using water from the van under ground, you still have to replace water in the vain. The next thing we do is pray for rain.Every body pray. Bill Gaither, Littleton

Thank God I planted Centipede grass a few years ago. Havent had to water it at all!

Having just read the posted article on the Raleigh City Council's decision to ban outdoor watering I am a bit confused. It appears the definition of outdoor watering is only pertinent to lawns. Does this actually mean that it is still okay to watch water pool up and run down asphalt and concrete drives and streets as a result of csr/deck/building/etc washing. This makes not one iota of sense. My family has been practicing serious water conservation efforts for 6 plus weeks now. We all remember the hardships created for so many in 2002. Yes, right down to saving water run-off while rinsing hand washed dishes. This has been used for container plants and they are all healthy still.

I personally deplore waste of our natural resources and this is a time that we need to get our priorities straight. I say ban outdoor watering PERIOD. We will be glad we did when spring arrives and there is still water available from our normal sources.

We were in the RDU Airport and most of the toilets, the auto flush kind, flushed several times before you could exit. We put a bucket in the shower to catch the water while it is warming up. This water is used for plants.

I drive through Wakefield and often notice excess water draining across the outbound lane of Plantation Drive in the mornings....I don't understand this apparent waste of water! Do they have a "commercial permit" to continue watering the "island greenery and plants"?
