house: on the road

Today was a big day! The house, albeit in two separate pieces, is now at it's permanent home site. The lower half has not been situated above the footers and the upper half is waiting on the trailer for the double cranes in the morning to lift it back onto it's home.
To fill in everyone that has joined this blog series recently, this is a house that was built my my husband's great-grandfather and grandfather in 1939. The land where it was sitting is for sale and it's zoned commercial - definitely out of our price range. Someone, whether it was a real estate agent or a developer, recommended that all buildings on the property be removed and the pond filled in. My husband and I have always had a love for older houses and wanted to restore an old farm house to live in. When we heard the plan for this house, we crunched some numbers, did some research and asked for the house (rather than see it bull dozed). The family gave us their blessing so we began looking for land. The rest, as they say, is history!
This morning began quite early. We had to be there at 6:30. Interestingly, there were cars parked across the street by the time we arrived, with people watching the event. The trooper arrived about 7:15 and they were ready to hit the road right away. I didn't know what to expect, but I thought there would be more officers to help block roads. As it was, the one office allowed me to pull out in front, he followed in the left hand lane. A tow truck came third in our parade. Two men rode with that driver and their job was to pull up mailboxes that may be in our way. Then came the truck with the house and finally my husband in his truck with a friend who replaced the pulled mailboxes.
Today went off so smoothly. These men really know what they are doing and had it all worked out. Even pulling in to our driveway, a very sharp and narrow turn. They did it like clockwork! Once the lower section was in the driveway, they went back to haul the upper level so that the officer could get back to his regular schedule.
The rest of the day was spent getting the house situated over the footings, which we discovered are not correct. We have a meeting tomorrow with the contractor to determine what needs to be done!
The picture shown for this blog is this house crossing a bridge over I-40! As you can see, we had about 4 inches of clearance over the bridge walls and the house hung over both sides. This was a massive job!
All in all, it was an exciting day and between the videos and photos, one I'll not soon forget.
