if walls could talk

As we began this house-moving project, I thought to myself, what fun it would be to find something exciting, like you'd see on that show, If Walls Could Talk. Of course, logic told me that this house has been in the family and certainly anything extraordinary would already be known and there would be no secrets to unveil. Imagine my surprise when we found "the writing on the walls."
OK, in all fairness, it's really nothing THAT astounding. However, it was quite a treat to pull some of the trim and molding down and see the hand-written name of my husband's great-grandfather written on the backs of a couple of boards. As we were pulling nails, we told our son that those same nails were driven into the wood by his Great-great Grandfather. I don't know if he was as moved by that as WE were, but he did seem impressed.
On another board, we found some more interesting writing. Without naming names, we do have information about who had crushes on whom. Written by a child's hand were the names of a couple a former resident + an unknown person. Again, it brings to life these folks you know today and just sitting there imagining them as children/young kids, doing things all young kids have done! What a treat! We have saved those boards!
Another interesting find, carved into the wood floor at the stairs were initials. I have a fair guess who they belong to! I may just have to ask the next time I see him/her!
Among other finds that thrilled us are extra pickets for the stairs (we broke one during disassembly) and additional wood for the floors and/or stairs.
Who knows what other "treasures" we'll find while we work on this house. What secrets will it share? What glimpses into a life we've only heard about will we see? I don't know, but I'm definitely interested in finding out!
