house project-slow, steady, forward

Well, we met with the house mover today and we have finally finalized some more plans.  After waiting more than 3 weeks for Progress Energy to give us an estimated cost to drop/raise power lines (and still not having an answer), we have decided to cut the upper floor off the house and move it in two pieces.  This is obviously not our preference, but at this point, we just want it moved and cannot continue to wait longer for answers we were promised we'd have in 48 hours.

The mover will begin work on Friday.  There will be about a week's worth of dismantling involved to shore up the upper floor in preparation of the move.  We will have to take down the railings at the stairs, but he said none of the floors would be damaged.  We will spend some time this week removing the cedar walls from the upper floor closets so that they are not damaged by the supports/piers that will be in place when the top of the house if picked up.

Hopefully, the weekend after Labor Day, the house will hit the road.  Our footings are in place and waiting.  Once we have the house over the footings we will have the brick mason build the foundation.  THEN we will finally be ready to work on our part at our pace.

Stay tuned for the next installment - with pictures of the de-construction and move.

Wow..it is amazing that they can move a house in pieces.

Good luck. We are remodeling a home right now and it is going so much slower than I would like. I am having a new roof put on this weekend, then we will repaint everything, then we are putting new flooring in all the rooms.

Now that's a project. I am sure glad It ain't me.

Oh Sweeties. You have a major job and I wish the best things can go. It's amazing how they can move houses, but even I didn't know they could take them down in stories and move like that. Cedar closets,, Don't find them much any ore. Can't blame you for trying to save it. Houses much more sturdy back then..

So interesting ... thanks for posting this in blogs. Looking forward for the next bit of news.

Rocknhorse... I know you'll be happy when it's all moved. Let me know the route that they'll be taking on the weekend of the move so I can avoid it! LOL My wallet would be in severe pain from a project like this!

Hope all goes well. Maybe someone from Progress will read this and take a hint!!! :-)

Ladyblue - I was amazed to even find closets in the house, much less cedar. There are 4 "bedrooms" upstairs and 3 have completely cedar-lined closets (wall to wall, floor to ceiling). Then there's a coat closet in the living room and a linen closet in the upstairs bathroom - again, both cedar. It amazes me. We will actually remove a couple of closets, but we'll salvage the cedar and use them elsewhere (in the walk-ins that we are adding). This house was built so solid and was well-planned.

I'm very excited and so far, our cost estimates have been pretty close (except for our very LARGE (double sized and cubed) footings.

It makes me nervous to cut it in half, but the mover has been in business for 50 years and explained the process to us. The upstairs floor will be moved with the lower section. There will be supports and beams under the walls of the upper floor. A crane will lift it off the bottom and replace it at the new land.

Spunky - I would LOVE for someone at Progress Energy to read my comments. I understand that things take time, but when someone tells me they will have an answer to my in 48 hours and I have to call them in 3-4 days, that's not good business practice. The 48 hours has turned into nearly 4 weeks and I STILL don't have any answers. Then we were told that when we finally get a price, it may take several weeks before we can get it scheduled. I can't keep waiting. Oh, and to make matters even worse, they required a $500 deposit before they would agree to investigate the route. I have paid my money and gotten absolutely NOTHING from it. I'm a patient person, but my patience is definitely wearing thin.

Legswilson - I would avoid the McGee's Crossroads area if I were you. I'm sure I'll be posting info once we have the actual date, so just be sure to check in and steer clear of Hwy's 50 and 210 during that time!
