quick thoughts | stardust, the movie

Yesterday I tore out of work so I could pick up my son and Rah-Rah for the last matinee of Stardust. And, oh my, am I happy for the last minute plan. I love a good fairy tale, so you can imagine how I'd react to a spectacular one.

Stardust, with Claire Danes, Robert Dinero (in an unforgettable closet scene) and one of my perennial faves, Michelle Pfeiffer, was simply put: dynamite. I sat in the middle of my group so I could talk to Rah-Rah and watch my son's face light up with wonder. It never fails to amaze me how smart and fun he is, even at nine. And Stardust was most definitely a movie filled with wonder.

Think Ladyhawke. Think The Princess Bride. Think Time Bandits.

Hollywood rarely makes movies of this ilk any longer, and it's a shame. Stardust was exhilarating, with its pirates, witches, the requisite quest, romance, humor, swordfights, mystical realism, and a wall into another world. It challenged us to open our minds and accept the truths of the fantastical realm and parallel universe of Stormhold. We especially loved the ship and the pirates, and the seven brothers. I knew I had fallen in love with the movie with the line in the first twenty minutes ... when one of brothers--princes, to be exact--looks up, at the urging of the king.

We laughed out loud, and clapped at the end, and cringed during the final battle scenes. One of the most visually stunning scenes, to me, was a long shot of Michelle Pfeiffer, the witch, in pursuit of the fallen star. She's racing across the countryside, with its dipping green hills and vast meadows, while her long golden hair flies behind her, waving high atop the billowing of her long black gown. It's every bit as stunning as the visuals in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but it's for the families.

My son and I give it a perfect five out of five stars, and maybe even ten fingers since we clapped and clapped at its finale. I wouldn't suggest it for younger kids, but for my nine year old boy (and my thirty-something self) it was bang on.

Thanks for the review Dolly. When I first saw the previews I suspected this was one that I might like to see. You have just confirmed my suspicions! I know my husband will enjoy it... after all, he's still a little boy at heart.

Dolly - you can really write! I'll pay to see this in a theater, instead of waiting for netfix. Now, I'll go back to reading our book...:D

So, if I somehow manage to sneak in a movie "on my own" during my vacation next week, are you saying THIS should be the one, Dolly D? Sounds like it was awesome.

This was a fantastic movie!!! I had never seen any previews (strange since I am an avid movie goer) but the reviews were impressive (which usually dooms a movie for me). Pirates, flying ships, falling stars, witches, good and evil .... WOW....some of everything. Plus you can take your older children (say 8+). Two thumbs up from rah-rah.

We'll go see it now, Thanks
