Does anyone have suggestions on how to make anxiety subside while having an MRI? I have to have 2 of them. My heart was pounding and I had to get out. Has anyone felt sensation while having one?  You do feel vibration, like they say you will, but are you supposed to be able to feel heat on the cheeks of your face and discomfort in the eyes? I have never had medal in my eyes, that is a question that they ask.

When I've had them done, I close my eyes and get a picture in my mind of a favorite place to be. I mentally block out where I am and think about memories of that place. Mind over matter seems to work for me. Of course the stupid things are so noisy!!

when i had one they told me that my doctor could prescribe a pill u might want to ask about that

Also this is a longshot. Many types of makeup even eyeliners have metallic fragments or compounds in them. This may have caused the discomfort that you experienced. It may have also been just related to the anxiety that you were feeling.

I am a healthcare professional and have schedule many MRIs for patients like you. Ask your doctor if you can be scheduled at a place that has open access MRI. If they are unaware of these options call Raleigh Radiology, Wake Radiology, or Rex and ask them if they have open access MRI and then inform your provider. My message got kinda garbled when I posted it, so email me at robertrad@embarqmail.com if you have any questions.

Hey Ifonly, I recently had an MRI. I pretended that I was a giant weiner sliding into a bun and the machine was a giant ketchup and mustard dispenser. Hold the relish, All my fears went away. tee hee heee ha ha ha. Now seriously, I did have an MRI but my problem was my size. I'm a big fella and it was a tight squeeze to get my scan. However, there are what is called open access MRI. While there are many different design types, go here to see an example of one, http://www.bethelroadopenmri.com/. Also Rex has an MRI that has a larger opening and shorter tunnel, http://www.rexatwork.com/centers/radiology/mri.htm Also Raleigh Radiology and Wake Radiology both have the open access units I believe. Check with your medical provider to see if you can be scheduled somewhere that has open access MRI. I am a healthcare professional and did schedule many MRIs for patients like you. It can be done.

My friend tried valium.....so how, it didn't work on her.....may work on you. Just a thought. Of course, someone will have to drive you to the MRI place.

ifonly, I am severely claustrophobic; the symptoms you describe can all be caused by panic. I had to be knocked out for the MRIs I had. Don't let them tell you they can't do it that way. I tried valium and then the open MRI, and neither worked--I couldn't go through with it. They do work for some, though, and insurance may not cover the anesth. way unless you try those first. Good luck.

I had an MRI at the end of July. 15 years ago, as a college freshman, I was hit by a drunk driver and sustained a lot of damage to my back and my shoulder. I go years with no problems beyond sore muscles, but this summer has been agonizing. My doc wanted to send me for physical therapy, so I asked for tests first. I hadn't had an MRI since the accident. Initially, I wasn't worried; but when I arrived, the nutjob woman at the desk put all kinds of panicky ideas in my head. Luckily, I was able to get past her fears and tackle my own. When I laid on the pallet that slides you into the machine, I was worried that I couldn't lay flat on my back for so long, but I was okay during the half-hour scan. I felt vibrations, but no heat. To get over my panic, I hummed. Loudly, and every song I could think of. When the vibes got worse, I hummed louder. I held onto the bottom of my shorts, which gave my hands something to hold on to. Plus, I was determined to get it done in one shot. Good luck.

I also.......hate them! Talk to your doctor.

Ifonly,

I can't take MRI's any longer. I have a pace maker and that won't allow it. Before I became bionic I had them get me a towel and put it across my eyes. That seemed to work for me.

The symptoms you are describing I have never heard before.
