a short explainer on rss feeds

I wrote a blog yesterday with much fanfare about the fact that we now offer RSS feeds for all Golo blogs. I was quite excited about that, couldn’t you tell?
Several people have asked for it and I wanted to get the word out as soon as possible. So, for those of you who have already found your favorites and gotten started, great! Spread the word.
But for those of you who aren’t familiar with RSS feeds and how they work…this is for you.
I’ll start by explaining how and why I use RSS feeds just to paint the picture.
Okay, I have a list of blogs that I really enjoy reading. But, it can be cumbersome to go to 12 different websites every day to see if they’ve posted new entries. (And for those of you at work, who shall remain nameless—a total waste of your employer’s time.)
So, I use what’s called a blog aggregator to put them all in one place for me and make it plain when there are new entries. It’s kind of like the way you see new e-mails in your inbox. You with me? Okay, let’s move on.
I use Bloglines.com. At bloglines, I type in the URL’s of the blogs I want on my list.
Now, I go there everyday to see if my favorites have new entries, and I can click through to read them from there.
It’s kind of like one-stop shopping and it makes sense.
There are others out there like Google Reader, so you can choose your own.
I use bloglines because I think it’s pretty easy and if a product is good to me, I’m known to commit. I am going to provide a few links below so those of you who are new to RSS feeds can read a little more, get a different perspective and hopefully get up and running soon.
If you have any questions or concerns, I’m always an e-mail away. And please, talk to your fellow Golo members. I’ve seen the way everyone helps everyone else here.
Let’s keep that momentum!
