help me pimp my ride!

My timing belt blew out on my Subaru Legacy Wagon (1990 w/ 150k).  It had never been changed since I bought it at 90k miles, I consider myself very lucky it lasted this long!  We're going to fix it for now, but my wife and I are already planning to get something else.
We like the Honda Element as well as the Subaru Outback. The Element is great, except it gets 25 mpg highway, whereas the Outback gets closer to 30mpg (so I'm told).  Does anyone know anything about these or other similar vehicles?

Nate, I knew that was your car when I saw the CCL sticker in the photo! Timing belts are not too expensive, but since you're looking anyway, here are my thoughts.

I am a huge Honda fan, but one bad thing about dear old Honda is the amount of road noise. I have read that it is really bad in the Element. Plus the 25mpg gas could definitely be better.

The Outback is definitely your better option in this case. Decent gas mileage, good cargo space and it's one of Subaru's better cars.

Good Luck!

I find it very interesting that many natives of the NC mountains -- especially around the Boone area -- drive Subarus in amazing numbers. Is the 4WD, brakes, or something else?

I was a huge VW fan and drove a Golf for almost 11 years ... we got rid of it because it was out of warranty, not because it was worn out. I moved over to a Nissan Altima, though, and have to say that I really love it.

Nate. Make sure you buy a new water pump while you are at it. I think you have to remove it to get to the timing belt on that year model.

If you have a car you like, keep fixing it. The car I drive is a 94 T-Bird and it has been completely replaced over the years. I know exactly how it behaves. And you don't take the depreciation hit as you would a new car. My wife's 97 T-Bird is the same way. Both have new engines, trannies, front ends, and all of the engine-attached stuff replaced. I'm currently working on an 85 F-150 pickup. It costs about $10,000 to completely redo a car including paint, $13,000 if you have someone else do ALL the work. You will have a car that will run for another 250,000 miles with appropriate maintenance. And amortized over that estimated 15 year life span, it costs you only about $900 per year for the actual auto equity. Then you do it again. As long as the frame is good, you can keep it up forever.

Thanks for the advice! ...Thugs - the water pump is actually what caused the belt to go, which I learned today. The mechanic is replacing both, for a mere $600! I couldn't believe it. I love my mechanic - he's the subaru expert at WASP auto in Durham. I call, talk directly with him, and he's super honest and nice. And Steve, I am definitely leaning toward hanging onto this one. I'll definitely have to get the AC fixed though too - it's been super hot without it this summer!

As one of them Subbie people around Boone, Its the 4wd and the long life of the cars. I have driven a Subaru since 1986 and would not have any other car. (not the same car of course) I had my timing belt and water pump replaced and it was no where near 600...more like 350...The Outback is the legacy with a few bells and whistles....I would not pay the difference. You see them with rusted quarter panels flapping in the wind but still running.
