Goldsboro woman shoots suspected burglar

Posted August 7, 2014

— A suspected burglar was wounded early Thursday when a Goldsboro woman shot him in the chest in her backyard, authorities said.

Wayne County deputies found Christopher Todd Brogden, 28, wounded in the yard of a home on Providence Church Road at about 4:30 a.m. He was listed in stable condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Paige Ham, 28, told deputies that she heard a noise in back of her home, looked out a window and saw the lock on her storage building was missing. While her roommate called 911, she went outside with a gun to see if anything had been stolen, she said.

As Ham approached the storage building, a man ran out toward her, and she fired one shot, hitting him, she told deputies.

Investigators said Ham won't be charged in the shooting, but charges are pending against Brogden in connection with the break-in.

With NC's Castle Doctrine, it's hard to believe people are still stupid enough to try and break into someone else's home. It's not worth losing your life over.

The guy she shot has a lengthy criminal record for meth and possession of STOLEN property. It doesn't take a freakin rocket scientist to know this guy was in the wrong! He been out of prison about 2 years...who's surprised that he's 'allegedly' re-offended?! If I found someone coming out of my building at 4:30am, you can best believe would have done the same thing. She definitely did the right thing , and ole dude definitely got what he deserved.

Smart lady. She did not approach and go outside with nothing. She had a loaded gun. Now the criminal is facing charges, as it should be. He had no business on her property. PERIOD!

Here we go again. No one was kicking this woman's door in.

Hans would abandon his liberal cluelessness in a hurry if criminals were kicking his door in 4 am and there was a gun available. I suspect Hansy has never been in a tight situation. Kudos to the lady on her reaction under stress.

"Babbling," "crying about," calling names, yes really sounds like a rational discussion to me.

Since you won't rationally discuss the issue I am through.

This happened a few doors down from me. We have had a problem with B&E's lately. My neighbor across the street had some property removed from his yard two days ago. Here's the thing. I would have done the same thing, except with a larger caliber. I feel for Paige. I know what it's like to have to shoot someone. People are getting tired of being targets. The perps just haven't learned that yet.

No, it isn't. Under current law it makes no difference where the threat was made.

Property is none tenths of the law.

No, only pointing out your irrational hatred/fear of an inanimate object and how everything is emotional with you. I have injected NO emotion into it. I am open to discussion and will do so rationally and without calling names.

I'm rationally trying to discuss an issue, so I'm not really sure what all that other stuff you're babbling about has to do with anything. It seems like you're trying to inject that emotion you're always crying about into the discussion.
