Goldsboro teacher struck, killed by day care bus

Some students at Meadow Lane Elementary School, at 3500 E. Ash St., witnessed the accident, Wayne County Schools spokesman Ken Derksen said.

Brandon Kincaid, 28, was in his second year as a second-grade teacher at the school.

"He was a very caring teacher and very dearly loved," Superintendent Michael Dunsmore said. "These are very, very difficult situations. What we're trying to do is support those students now and, as we move forward, help them get over this."

Derksen said a team of school psychologists and school counselors has been dispatched to Meadow Lane Elementary and would remain there are long as needed. Extra support would be available for the 21 students in Kincaid's class and for any students who saw the accident, he said.

Parents picked up about 175 of the school's 639 students early, Derksen said.

Kincaid was in his wheelchair when he was hit at about 8:15 a.m. by a Small World Day Care Center bus driven by Ray Batts, 56, who had just dropped students off at the school. Kincaid died at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.

Small World Day Care representatives declined to comment.

Kincaid also was a youth pastor at Neuse Baptist Church in Kinston. His wife is expecting the couple's first child in June, according to Facebook posts.
