RALEIGH, N.C. — Portions of Glenwood Avenue inside the Beltline will be closed Saturday for a repaving operation, the state Department of Transportation announced Friday.

All westbound lanes of Glenwood will be closed between the Five Points intersection and St. Mary's Street. Intermittent closures will affect eastbound lanes. The closures will begin at 6 a.m. and will last until 9 p.m., weather permitting.

Westbound traffic will be detoured onto Fairview Road, then right onto St. Mary's Street and back onto Glenwood. Eastbound traffic can take a detour onto St. Mary's Street, then left onto Fairview Road and back onto Glenwood.

Road crews will be laying the final layer of pavement on Glenwood, between Alexander Road and St. Mary's Street.

DOT officials said the closure is necessary for safety reasons, because there isn't enough room for both traffic and construction equipment.

The work is part of a $1.7 million project to resurface Glenwood between Wade Avenue and Women's Club Drive. Drivers have complained of potholes along that stretch, and DOT officials have said the asphalt is coming loose from its concrete base.

Contractor CC Mangum Co. is on schedule to complete the project in June.
