— A girls' soccer coach arrested on child porn charges over the weekend resigned Wednesday from his position at Green Hope High School, a spokeswoman for the Wake County Public School System said.

Robert Jules Peterson, 43, of 113 Tarbert Court in Cary, had been suspended with pay since his arrest Saturday on six counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Police say the charges stem from sexually explicit photos of young girls that were allegedly found on Peterson's computer. None of the girls are believed to be local.

Peterson was also a social studies teacher at Green Hope High School, where he taught since 2001, and last spring, he led the girls' soccer team to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4-A girls' soccer championship.

Authorities say their investigation is continuing and that it could lead to other charges.

Peterson is out of jail on a $50,000 bond.
