— A 5-year-old Raleigh girl was killed Sunday afternoon when she was struck by a car that ran off New Hope Road near Hollenden Drive, according to a wreck report.

Raleigh police said Sia Elizabeth Byass, 37, lost control of her vehicle and ran off the right side of the road, striking a set of mailboxes, a garbage can and wooden steps outside an apartment where two young girls lived. She struck Nadia Imania Hines, 5, of 4916-B North New Hope Road, killing her.

Another child, 4-year-old Kamiyah Wright, was sitting on the steps outside the apartment. She was injured by debris from the crash and was treated and released at WakeMed in Raleigh.

Byass, of 7009 Woodbend Drive, Apt. H, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving and unsafe tires.

New Hope Road was closed in both directions for several hours Sunday afternoon while a crash reconstruction team investigated the scene.

No other information was released.

Shame on those of you who sit as judge against a woman who must be feeling the worst type of guilt. Have you never driven a car over the speed limit, or that has questionable tires or brakes? All of these could have put you in the same boat as this woman! I pray that I never have to test whether or not I could forgive a person who took the life of my child by accident, but I also pray that God would help me forgive if I found myself in that position. My heart goes out to both sides of this particular tragedy.

drove past this around 4:15. husband and I thought something really big happened throughout the apartment complex due to all the crime scene tape up [covered three buildings at least].

i'm very very sad to hear what actually happened. RIP Nadia.

You gotta wear one. It's the law.

I wear a seat belt because I want to increase my odds of living through an accident.

please enlighten us as to when "gubmint" is not "gubmint".

...is that your attempt to cast all those against too much government as uneducated hayseeds?

@btneast, please enlighten us as to when "gubmint" is not "gubmint".

It takes a LOT of govermnent people, agencies, time, supplies, laws, etc. to keep people and cars safe. Seat belts. You gotta wear one. It's the law. But, you'll see tons of people here crying about big gubmint.

Maybe I think that 1/32" of tire tread is plenty. Why do I need gubmint to say otherwise?

What do you self-professed “less government” people say now?

Less government does not mean no government. This is NOT the "less government" world people talk about.....this falls under basic societal protection. You picked a poor example to advance your arguement.

If people want to drive around with bald tires, no brakes, bad steering, obscured windshields, no brake lights...it’s on them. Government needs to stay out of our lives.

And, if these same people don’t want to carry car insurance, the government should have nothing to say about that either!

Heck, if people don’t want to get government approved drivers training so they can get a government-issued license to drive...they should be able to say “NO!”.

Right? This is the “less government” world that people talk about all the time.

What do you self-professed “less government” people say now? Should car safety inspections be required? Should drivers be required to have a license & insurance? Why?

I saw the video of this scene on the news. She drove off the road, took out a mailbox and then continued on and on and on...until she finally ended up in the back of a parking lot where she struck & killed this child.

Even with totally bald tires, I'd be surprised if she hit the brakes. She certainly didn't seem to have any control of the vehicle.

I can't believe she only got charged with a misdemeanor. Where is the justice in that little girls death? She was driving wreckless plus bald tires and only gets a misdemeanor? That is CRAZY!!!

Did you really expect more???!! lol Look at Shania Davis her mom sold her to the man who killed & raped her...the mom is out on bond and the man is in prison YET to be indicted.

Was it raining the day of the accident? I only ask because then I can see bald tires being a problem...but if it was not raining it just probably happened so fast. She may have looked down or way probably turned the car in the direction of where she looked making her jump the curb. Too late to catch her self hit the mailboxes and the child. Sad situation I cannot imagine the grief that mother feels for her loss.
