Girl, 12, struck on U.S. 70 in Wayne County

— A 12-year-old girl was struck and critically injured by a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 70 in Wayne County Thursday night.

State troopers said the girl ran out into traffic on the highway outside Goldsboro shortly before 9:30 p.m. She was flown to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

The pickup driver, James Brooks Jr., 67, of New Bern, was charged with driving while impaired. Troopers said that he had been drinking.

    And at 9:30 at night... wonder where the girls parents were and what a 12 year old is doing out running across a street that late at night? Not to take away from the drunk guy as he should be held accountable however sounds like a bit of non-parenting at fault here as well. The parents should also be held accountable!

    According to WITN's website she died after being transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. The driver that hit her was charged with a DWI.

    Hwy 70 is 4-lane all the way through the county. Just wondering why the young lady would be "(running)out into traffic."?!?!!
