Gift cards are worthless after Cary spa closes

Posted November 10, 2016

A popular local spa suddenly closed in Cary, leaving customers holding thousands of dollars in unusable gift cards.

Angry gift card owners who tried to visit The Spa by Mitchell's at Cary Town Center found the lights out and doors locked.

Some told 5 On Your Side that they were stuck with unredeemable gift cards worth more than $200.

A spokesman for spa owner Mark Mitchell said between a change in management and a significant drop in mall traffic, business declined to the point they "ran out of money and couldn't pay bills."

A separate business, Mitchell's Hair Styling Academy owned by Mark Mitchell's brother, is still in operation.

Mitchell has been in the beauty business in the Triangle for more than 40 years, the spokesman said. He's "very disappointed and feels very bad" about the impact on customers. He acknowledges there may be as much as $20,000 in now worthless, outstanding gift cards.

Plenty of those cards were purchased years ago, a reminder to consumers to use gift cards soon after getting them.

Those who purchase a gift card with a credit card may be able to get some of the value back, so long as the purchase was made in the past 90 days.

Same thing happened a while back with their Triangle Town Center location....that's what happens when dad retires and thinks his kids are mature enough to run the family business. Sad that such a name has gone so south

Is this really news? That's usually what happens to gift cards when businesses close.
