Getting Produce to Cleveland's Food Desert

Case Western Reserve University needs farmhands. Many parts of Cleveland need fresh food -- and host people who are in vital need of jobs. One might think that the twain would never meet, but CWRU has other ideas, with an innovative program to recruit workers, provide them with a $10/hour job including $40 worth of food weekly, and teach them farm skills. Plus, there's free transport on a shuttle bus. While the jobs would only be part-time, they'd offer a chance for a very different work environment, direct access to new skills, and a chance to bring in an impressive amount of fresh, healthy produce.

Cleveland landscapers ought to benefit from the program, as people with farming skills are also valuable in the landscaping trade. Meanwhile, participants could bring training back into their own communities to contribute to urban farms, backyard gardens, and more.
