RALEIGH, N.C. — Thursday is Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the North Carolina State Fair, and that means free admission for those who bring a non-perishable food donation.

Fairgoers who bring five cans of Food Lion brand food will receive one free admission ticket.

All donations benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, and the event at the Fairgrounds is one of the largest one-day canned-food drives in the state.

In the 21-year history of the event, about 4 million pounds of food have been donated.

The Food Bank of Central & Eastern N.C. will distribute the foot to needy people and hunger-relief agencies in a 34-county area.

Mike Hall, Food Lion's director of operations for Raleigh and Henderson , said the store has big goals for Thursday's drive.

"Today is a really exciting day. We're looking to raise 250,000 pounds of food today," he said. "We will have plenty of volunteers out here. We need help."
