Get in State Fair free Thursday with food donation

Posted October 23, 2014

— Thursday is Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the North Carolina State Fair, and that means free admission for those who bring a non-perishable food donation.

Fairgoers who bring five cans of Food Lion brand food will receive one free admission ticket.

All donations benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, and the event at the Fairgrounds is one of the largest one-day canned-food drives in the state.

In the 21-year history of the event, about 4 million pounds of food have been donated.

The Food Bank of Central & Eastern N.C. will distribute the foot to needy people and hunger-relief agencies in a 34-county area.

Mike Hall, Food Lion's director of operations for Raleigh and Henderson , said the store has big goals for Thursday's drive.

"Today is a really exciting day. We're looking to raise 250,000 pounds of food today," he said. "We will have plenty of volunteers out here. We need help."

@ONELOVE They're labeled Do not use for my purpose of using them to get into the fair. They are not expired when I'm giving them today. The label comes off later today :)

@POWDEREDTOASTMAN I'm sorry but they're not expired? I'm giving cans today on 10/23/14 and they expire 10/30/14.. Please learn to read.

@ONELOVE I didn't see any restrictions on the expiration date, only the type of cans and that they are from food lion. They are NOT expired by the time they leave my hands. Thanks!

"I stocked up for this purpose and they're labeled do not use."
OH ! I just noticed this!!! So, you're donating cans to the Food Bank that are labeled "Do Not Use"?! oh boy!

"They don't expire until the end of October." GOBBLEDYGOO

You know. By the time they actually reach recipients, they will be expired. You give a whole 8 days for someone to benefit from your cans. Way to go!!

Why is western NC excluded? It is called the NC State Fair, not the Eastern and Central NC State Fair.

"I bought my cans about 5 years ago when they were on sale for 25 cents each! I stocked up for this purpose and they're labeled do not use. They don't expire until the end of October."

It's kind of pathetic that you're giving expired food just because you're cheap
