RALEIGH, N.C. — Good news for all you North Carolina legislature geeks out there: Bill summaries are now available to the public online.
The General Assembly's Research Division last week began posting the summaries on the legislature's website, available whenever users look up a bill. The documents, which provide brief analysis of each piece of legislation, are a valuable resource for understanding how proposals could change current law.

Before they went online, members of the public essentially had to show up in person to committee meetings to get the summaries or ask the bill's sponsor directly.

Although it can take a few days for legislative researchers to draft the summaries in house, they'll now go online as soon as staff members issue them to lawmakers.

A disclaimer on all of the documents clarifies that they do not constitute an "official statement of legislative intent."
