GASTON, N.C. — The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Gaston man on charges he scammed an elderly couple, accepting payment for home improvements he never delivered.

The couple told Det. Tyree Davis, of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, that they hired Archie Hill, 47, to work on a home in Littleton. The victims, who live in Washington, D.C., paid Hill $48,000 over time, including a $10,000 payment, Davis said.

The victims told Davis that they tried to contact Hill about the work, but he avoided them.

Northampton deputies arrested Hill Thursday and charged him with obtaining property by false pretense. He was being held in the Halifax County jail on $5,500 bond.
