Gas leak prompts evacuations in Durham

Posted November 2, 2012

— Firefighters had to evacuate a residential area near Guess Road and Peppertree Street in Durham after a report of a gas leak late Friday morning.

Angie Townsend, a spokeswoman for PSNC Energy, said contractors working in the area accidentally damaged a large gas line and that crews shut off the gas valve at 12:50 p.m.

About 49 customers were without service at the height of the outage, Townsend said.

I believe you will find the WTVD main offices and studios are still located in Durham near the Main Library. They just got too big for their britches and wanted everyone to think they are from the Big City.

Justmy2cntz, you are correct, we have had to tune to WRAL for years to get any news from Durham even though WTVD is officially a Durham station.

@ eyeoneastsky - I was on the phone w/my daughter when DPD came to the door and told her she had to leave. I'm just trying to find out if I can go home after work. Hopefully it's been fixed by now. Wondering when it'll be safe to turn on the heat again.

"WTVD has not been Durham's station for many, many years. They moved, mentally and physically, to Raleigh years ago. If you want to find out what is happening in Durham watch WRAL. heelsrule"

LOL! This is true, but I thought maybe they'd have a local standby since they still keep trucks at the old spot downtown. I've always watched WRAL anyway to find out about Durham news.

I live closer to the Hillandale end of Peppertree and didn't know anything about the gas leak until a relative called and asked if I was okay.

It's sad when you have to watch the news station from another city to find out what's going on in your area. I even emailed the "other" station, hoping they'd get something posted. Keep this updated please - I live on this block and at work right now.
