RALEIGH, N.C. — A quarter-mile stretch of Hillsborough Street in Raleigh was closed for several hours Monday evening after a gas leak in the area.

Both directions of the road near North Carolina State University were closed at Henderson Street and Dixie Trail after a small service line was damaged while crews were paving in the area earlier Monday, according to PSNC Energy spokeswoman Angie Townsend.

A portion of the road had already been closed as a result, said Laura Hourigan, a spokeswoman for the Raleigh Police Department.

Some businesses in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

It was the second gas leak in Raleigh Monday. A building at 227 S. Salisbury St. had to be evacuated Monday morning.
