Gas drops below $3 a gallon at some area stations
Holiday travelers are getting an early present, as gas is selling for less than $3 a gallon at some Triangle locations.
Posted — UpdatedSix stations on South Saunders Street in Raleigh had posted prices for regular unleaded at $2.96 to $2.99 on Tuesday.
"I think it should be lower," driver Charise Chavies said as she filled her tank. "It's all good. Lower is better."
The average price in the Triangle is $3.21, according to AAA Carolinas. Stations in Cary, Wake Forest and Fuquay-Varina all reported prices far above the $3 mark.
The average is 4 cents less than a year ago and 9 cents less than a month ago, AAA said. It matches the July 4 average as the lowest of 2012 for the region.
Experts credit a combination of lower demand and a plentiful supply of gas for the falling prices, which they said should continue dropping at least through the end of December.
The last time the Triangle average for gas was under $3 a gallon was Dec. 28, 2010.
