Garner 9U baseball team needs help making historic World Series trip

Posted July 20

— Garner Baseball, Inc.'s 9-under team is heading to the World Series - the PONY International World Series, that is.

The team, the first from Garner to make it this far, will head to California this week to play in the tournament.

Currently the team is raising funds so family members can join them on their historic journey. They hope to raise $20,000 by Thursday.

Being a baseball dad, you want your kids to play their best, but you never excpect them to go this far. Making the Allstar team is great, going to Cali for the WS is out of this world. Its 13 kids and 4 coaches, they will need every bit of that 20k and maybe more for flight and hotel just for the team.

WRAL, why don't you sponsor the team and their parents. Surely, a large business such as yourself, can find a way to write of $20K for a good cause. Stand up for the community for a change instead of crying about how we should help.

I do have sense--I would fly with them but at my expense. I have no px. with raising money for the team members or a high school band to go to the Rose Bowl or any other event as a reward for their hard work-but I do have a px. with raising funds for all of the the band members "families" to go. Plus its not a "put down" as you so eloquently referred; its a matter of common sense. Again, as I stated earlier, good luck to those who wish to contribute to the cost of the "family members" going. I believe "family members" might be more than just the parents. At what point does the "member" total stop? If the parents go, what about the brothers/sisters? They are also "family members".

I'm always trying to raise money for my kids' swimming team, so I have no problem sending in a donation to Garner Baseball... Good luck, Garner!!!

Just because the parents could afford to buy baseball gear and pay for their child to play on the team doesn't mean they have 1000's to spend on accompanying their child to their World Series. And if you had a child under 9 years old you wouldn't dare let them fly across the country without you I don't think. Have some sense please. High school bands have to raise money all the time when they are honored to be invited to the Rose Bowl for example. It's something that many in the community are VERY happy to help with. Why do you have to put down and question a group for wanting to bring these kids' parents along with them?!? To do otherwise would be ridiculous.

I would think there are better things we could be raising funds for.

more welfare? food stamps? more medicaid? more dependence? yeah, go tell the kids that and get them started on the dole early. more votes!!

Maybe I'm wrong--but the parents and family members knew this was a possibility when the child signed up to play PONY ball. I would have no px. trying to raise funds to help the team players and coaches get to California. But, to raise funds to help the "family members" make the trip --that has the making of "real expensive". Good luck to those who want to help this endeavor. I wish them well.
