Gardner: Heat will be the issue Monday, storms Tuesday

"Heat will be an issue this afternoon," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. "With lots of sun and little chance for storms, our muggy air mass will remain with us today and tomorrow."

A heat advisory is issued when a heat index reaches 105 degrees. "We'll be just under that criteria today, but it will be uncomfortably hot," said Gardner.

Temperatures will peak in the mid 90s by late afternoon. "A few evening storms could begin to take shape," said Gardner, "but the risk is minimal."

Tuesday will follow a similar trend, as it will still be very hot and muggy throughout the day.

With a high in the low 90s, Tuesday will be just a bit cooler than Monday, and the chance for rain and scattered thunderstorms will increase as a cold front approaches the area.

"Our biggest threat will be from wind damage," said Gardner. "There may be heavy rain at times with frequent lightning. Tuesday will be the day with the best chance of storms this work week."

By noon Tuesday, severe thunderstorms and lightning could hit the area and continue throughout the afternoon and evening.

According to Gardner, Wednesday and Thursday will be pleasant and cool compared to the start of the work week, and skies will clear up as the weekend approaches.
