Game review: The Mummy's Mask is great addition to Pathfinder Adventure Card Game
Posted November 20, 2016
The Mummy's Mask Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is the fourth installment of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. This time players go adventuring into the desert lands of Osirion in pursuit of lost treasures. The tombs of the ancient await. Read on, adventurer.
For those new to the game, one to four gamers select a fantasy character and pursue and defeat a villain by visiting multiple locations in a fantasy world. Along the way there will be monsters to fight, barriers to overcome, henchmen to battle, allies to win favor from and treasure to collect.
Each fantasy character has a certain number of cards representing the spells, weapons, items and allies that are part of his or her retinue. If a character ever runs out of these cards, he or she dies and the adventure is over. But a character can gather more cards all throughout the adventure. This is one of the best parts of the game.
Experienced gamers should know this version of the game is at the core the same as its predecessors, with a few minor additions. (Take a look at previous reviews on the Deseret News for Skull and Shackles and Wrath of the Righteous.)
The new additions include the following things that help evoke the theme and flavor of ancient Egypt: First, a new keyword on some cards called "invoke" can involve good and bad cards related to certain traits. Also, character tokens can be added to location decks, and when they are uncovered that character may explore, encounter cards and play cards but may not move.
The final new concept for Mummy's Mask is the trigger trait. This trait comes into play when a player examines a card at a location. The trait is listed in bold red at the top of a card and, when read, must be followed.
The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is by far the best representation of a role-playing game using a set of cards and dice. Each character has a set of skills and abilities that can develop over time. Six adventure decks combine together for an epic campaign. It's a fun ride filled with twists and turns. But beware: If a character dies, all will be lost!
This version of the Pathfinder Adventure Game comes with more than 500 cards, featuring seven character classes, a wide array of gear and magical treasures, and dozens of allies, monsters and villains from the Mummy’s Mask storyline.
The first adventure deck is included in the base game. The Half-Dead City Adventure Deck begins the journey through the Mummy’s Mask Adventure Path. There are also a few preparatory adventures that get things started and a quick start guide that boils the rules down to four pages so gamers can jump right in.
The Mummy's Mask is a wonderful addition to the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game and is even a good start for those brand-new to the game. Those who like role-playing games or are interested in them can enjoy the game because of its structure and ease of getting people involved. There is some setup time but it doesn't require as much prep as a standard role-playing game.
